After gathering opinions from flight attendants worldwide about what they hope passengers won't do, Business Insider compiled a list of 21 things that, if you're a responsible passenger, you should be mindful of to avoid causing inconvenience, trouble, and unnecessary problems so that you, other passengers, and flight attendants can all enjoy a comfortable journey together.
1. Don't take up too much space in the overhead compartment on the plane.
Ideally, you should only keep one suitcase in the overhead compartment, and place smaller bags under the seat in front of you.
2. Smile and return the flight attendant's greeting.
A smile or a slight nod in response to a flight attendant's greeting when you board the plane makes them feel their position is "acknowledged." Moreover, a polite initial attitude always makes things easier and smoother.
3. Only dispose of trash when a flight attendant arrives with a trash bag.
On an airplane, littering should also be done at the right time and place. Flight attendants will usually go to each seat at a specific time to collect your trash. Therefore, you shouldn't ask them to collect your trash while they are distributing food, litter in your seat, or insist on throwing your trash into their shopping cart.
4. Stop putting your feet up on the seat or on another passenger's seat.
This behavior is very impolite and inconvenient for other passengers, not just the flight attendants!
5. Don't ask the flight attendant what they have when they're pushing the drinks cart toward you.
The flight attendant won't be able to list nearly 100 drinks in detail when there are around 200 other passengers waiting to be served just like you. Remember there's always an informational menu pinned to the seat in front of you for your reference.
6. Listen to flight safety instructions.
Even though you've flown a lot and are familiar with these instructions, your attentive attitude makes the flight attendants feel more respected when performing their duties.
7. Proactively tell the flight attendant about your coffee preferences.
Coffee is a more complicated beverage to serve than other drinks. Therefore, when ordering coffee, be sure to tell the flight attendant if you'd like it with cream or sugar. You know, if passengers don't state their preferences, the flight attendant will have to repeat that simple question about a million times to the remaining passengers.
8. Be responsible for your belongings.
Know the exact weight limit for the amount of luggage you are allowed on the plane and determine if you can manage it yourself. Flight attendants can help, but not all of them.
9. Do not use the restroom when the plane is signaling to land.
This person's small action will cause the entire flight to be delayed and land later, causing inconvenience to everyone.
10. Remove your headphones while the flight attendant is speaking to you.
Please remove your headphones when the flight attendant comes over and asks what drink you would like.
11. Press the call button only when absolutely necessary.
Don't press the call button if your problem isn't too serious or urgent, especially if you understand that the takeoff command means everyone must remain seated, including the flight attendants.
12. Keep your hands on the ground if you need assistance from a flight attendant.
Flight attendants will be very annoyed if you poke, pull their arm, or nudge them just to ask for something. Speak loudly enough for them to hear, and they will receive your signal that you need assistance, instead of acting impolitely.
13. Do not use the restroom while the seatbelt is still on.
Unless it's a two-year-old child, you can absolutely wait until the last minute when the seatbelt sign goes off. Flight attendants are unlikely to remind you about such an insensitive matter, so you need to be mindful of it yourself.
14. Not showing any signs of displeasure or making demands regarding meals.
The flight attendants will assist and serve you as best as they can, but you should also be mindful and accept that the amount of food, choices, and other requests are limited. Remember, you are on a flight, not a five-star hotel or restaurant.
15. Don't act like you're sitting in first class.
Behave respectfully and know your place.
16. Always wear shoes/sandals.
Taking off your shoes can cause unpleasant odors. Moreover, you're on a civilized flight, so don't go barefoot in the restroom or walk around the cabin. It's very impolite!
17. Always keep a pen handy.
Flight attendants are generally not obligated to provide you with pens on board, and this is not an item provided by the aircraft to passengers. You might occasionally need to take notes, and the process of asking and returning pens to a flight attendant for such minor matters would be very inconvenient.
18. Avoid snapping your fingers to call a flight attendant.
Raising your hand to signal for assistance is very impolite – even though it doesn't involve touching them like in point number 12. Remember, you can call out to them or use hand gestures.
19. Don't exercise on an airplane.
Flight attendants understand that you might be tired from sitting on a long flight, but actions like stretching or even excessive exercise in the cabin to loosen up your body are not a good idea at all.
20. Don't get upset with the flight attendants if it's not their fault.
Flight cancellations, delays, and disruptions during the flight are not the fault of the flight attendants. However, many passengers tend to blame them because they are the only ones directly serving and interacting with them throughout the journey. This is a very uncivilized behavior.
21. The flight attendants were unaware of the information from the captain.
