Passengers and travelers alike can test out this super-fast and convenient new technology in Terminal One (lounge) by downloading a movie or TV box using 5G. With this technology, passengers can load websites or videos almost instantly, and movies are streamed in high quality without lag.

Brad Miller, Chief Executive of Manchester Airport International, said: “We are delighted with Vodafone’s support for 5G. As we design and deliver our £1 billion transformation programme, we are constantly innovating and introducing new technology to improve the airport experience. As a business with a strong presence in the community, Vodafone is a natural partner for such a pilot project and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.”
Manchester Airport now covered by 5G
Since 5G handsets are not yet available to consumers, Vodafone has completed the trial using a Gigacube device, a 5G-enabled mobile router. Users will be connected to the network via the Gigacube device to download and stream content.
“We are proud to be the first to bring 5G to airports and will be adding more major travel hotspots to our 5G network this year,” said Nick Jeffery, CEO of Vodafone. With faster speeds, lower latency and increased capacity, many believe 5G has the potential to revolutionize everyday life by helping aviation, road systems, businesses, homes… become better connected.
Mr. James Hope, head of internet network in the North of the UK for Vodafone
James Hope, Vodafone's head of network coverage for the North of the UK, told reporters: "This latest plan is really a continuation of our commitment to the North West. Vodafone is committed to bringing this technology to seven areas, including Manchester, and this is a great way to start the project."
On Vodafone's 5G coverage plans:
Vodafone has a long-standing commitment to the North West and made the UK’s first 5G three-way call back in September 2018. Vodafone is currently working with digital innovation hub MediaCityUK to help start-ups and entrepreneurs become more productive.
For airports, 5G will help measure traffic and congestion within the airport. 5G can also help reduce waiting times for passengers. Elsewhere, 5G can help businesses in a variety of ways, from virtual tours of a new building to monitoring pollution levels in a city. 5G is fantastic technology and we believe it will make a real difference for the people of Manchester.
Plans to cover the entire city of Manchester with 5G are still in the testing phase as 5G handsets won't be available until later this year.
