It is famous throughout the Mediterranean region because it is easy to make, delicious and has a pretty eye-catching appearance. Traditionally, ratatouille was not presented in the fancy vegetable layers it is today. It was a rather simple dish, consisting of cubes of zucchini, tomatoes, green and red peppers, onions, and garlic cooked in tomato sauce. Ratatouille was often served as a side dish, but it could also be served as a main course with bread, rice, or pasta.
