8 of the world's most iconic breakfasts

11/02/2017

People often say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you understand the differences in breakfasts around the world? Waking up to samosas, a popular vegetarian dish in India, custard, and coffee is one of the most delicious and distinctive breakfasts in the world.

Breakfast in Nyaungshwe, Myanmar

For most tourists, Burma in their dreams is a picture of ancient temples, golden pagodas, and people with friendly, hospitable smiles. However, if you have the chance to visit Myanmar, breakfast there will be incredibly appealing, one of the unforgettable highlights of your Myanmar exploration. While visiting Inle Lake, tourists can easily find Thukha Caffee, one of the town's only tea houses serving coffee and typical Burmese pastries for breakfast.

Pakora (fried vegetable sandwich) is served alongside delicious, crispy samosas, sweet coconut cakes, and yellow bean cakes. It's delightful to wake up early to watch the sunrise over Inle Lake, then relax on a sofa and enjoy a typical Burmese breakfast.

Breakfast in Lisbon, Portugal

Nothing extraordinary, extremely simple, but for many tourists, breakfast in Lisbon is among the best breakfasts in the world, consisting of pastel de nata (a sweet and sour pastry made from an egg with cinnamon and sugar) and a cup of Bica (espresso).

The sweet and sour taste of the pastel de nata cake is balanced with the bitterness of the coffee, creating a strangely perfect aroma.

Pastel de nata, derived from Pastéis de Belém, is one of the most popular breakfast foods in Lisbon.

Pancakes in New York

Pancakes are a popular food in New York. So how do Americans make them? They roll them thinly or top them with various toppings and other ingredients like crispy fried bacon or spread with syrup. Tourists can try pancakes at roadside stalls along the West Village in Manhattan, where there are delicious quinoa pancakes served with coconut, strawberries, and pistachios.

Many people might start their day with a pancake accompanied by a light cocktail such as the Good Morning or Sunshine (cocchi rosa, prosecco, bitter bergamot) or a Mary Ann Summers (with kaffir lime, coconut, vodka, lime juice, and soda).

Crispy fried eggs in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Any visitor to Sri Lanka shouldn't miss the opportunity to enjoy a signature breakfast dish called hopper. This type of pancake, usually made with flour or eggs, resembles a small savory pancake and has a fried egg in the center. Additionally, string hoppers (a type of noodle made from red or white rice) can be eaten with curry and are quite popular for breakfast.

Fried Jacks in Ambergris Caye, Belize

A typical Belizean breakfast often includes eggs, meat, fried beans, and pieces of Fry Jacks! Fry Jacks are made from dough in the shape of small, hollow pouches that are deep-fried until crispy. They are served with a hot sauce drizzled over them.

Israeli shakshuka

Shakshuka is a meatless dish, but that doesn't make it any less delicious. The ingredients for Shakshuka include chopped tomatoes, onions, green and red peppers, parsley, garlic, dill, and eggs. It's typically served with pita bread or toast.

Jams and bread in Santiago, Chile

Breakfast in Chile is incredibly simple. You can choose two slices of bread with jam in between, accompanied by a cup of hot coffee. That's the perfect Chilean breakfast.

Ulster Fry in Belfast, Northern Ireland

Breakfast here is considered the best by many tourists. It's a unique blend of Irish and English breakfasts, consisting of eggs, sausages, ham or fish with chips.
