The sudden inclusion of Hong Thai, a globally influential brand closely associated with Thai tourism, on a warning list has shaken the Thai herbal medicine industry, according to local media. Testing of product samples (formula number 2, with registration numbers G 309/62 and G 308/62) conducted by the Thai Department of Medical Sciences revealed a serious violation of hygiene and safety standards.

In-depth analyses confirmed the product was contaminated with various microorganisms, including Total Aerobic Microbial Count, Total Combined Yeasts and Mold Count, and, most dangerously, the presence of bacteria of the genus Clostridium spp. These indicators exceeded the strict safety limits stipulated in the Thai Ministry of Public Health in 2021. As a result, the product was classified as a “substandard herbal product” under Article 60 (2) of the Herbal Products Act 2019 (BE 2562).

The Thai FDA has specifically announced the infringing product batch number 000332, manufactured on December 9, 2024, and expiring on December 8, 2027. Given the widespread production and consumption, identifying and thoroughly recalling this batch from the market is a significant challenge. Authorities have issued a public notice urging citizens and tourists to immediately stop using products from this batch. This is a decisive action to prevent the spread of potential pathogens, demonstrating the high sense of responsibility of the Thai health authorities.
