Weaving childhood dreams with Vietnamese cultural threads at Ho Van space

31/05/2025

On May 31 and June 1, 2025, Ho Van space will welcome the festival "Growing up with Tradition" - the opening event of the series of activities "Weaving heritage - Weaving creativity" organized by the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam in collaboration with Hanoi Grapevine.

In the constant flow of modern society, connecting the young generation with traditional values and the quintessence of national culture is becoming an increasingly urgent task. In the heart of Hanoi, where history, knowledge and culture converge, Ho Van - an inseparable part of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam is becoming a new cultural rendezvous, where journeys of "growing up with tradition" are woven from the very materials of heritage.

The festival is not only a gift for children on International Children's Day but also an invitation for the community, especially the young generation, to explore, learn and love the traditional cultural values of the nation.

"We believe that the love of heritage, if nurtured early, will become a solid foundation for each individual to grow up with the cultural identity of their nation. 'Growing up with Tradition' is not just a festival - it is a journey for children to touch seemingly distant cultural values through handicraft activities, folk arts, and direct interaction with artisans" - Mr. Khanh Duy from Dong Da shared with his daughter.

An open space - A heritage journey

From 10:00 to 21:00 on the two days of the festival, Ho Van will become a vibrant and multi-dimensional art space, where every step brings us closer to the treasure trove of Vietnamese cultural heritage. Different from conventional exhibition models, “Growing up with Tradition” offers a highly interactive playground, where children can not only watch and listen but also touch, experience and create in each activity.

The festival space is designed to be open, with no entrance fee, to encourage free, close and equal participation of all subjects. There, urban children will for the first time be able to print woodcuts by hand, try to wear ancient headdresses, or assemble pieces of pottery into art paintings. Adults, while bringing their children to attend, will also find here memories that they thought had faded, awakened by the colors of folk paintings, the gentle sound of mortar and pestle, or the gentle fragrance of Do paper.

The intersection of tradition and innovation

What makes the festival “Growing up with Tradition” so attractive is the way traditional values are recreated, not rigidly or simply for display. Instead, there is a flexible intersection between tradition and creativity, between heritage and modern application, through the hands of artisans, creators and contemporary art organizations.

The festival also dedicates a special space to handicraft booths, displaying and selling products inspired by folk culture. This is not only a place for visitors to admire sophisticated products from La Khe silk, artistic paper lamps, Do paper paintings, lacquer, mosaic pottery, etc., but also an opportunity for consumers to be more aware of the value of Vietnamese handicrafts in modern life.

Each item here tells a story, not only about the materials and techniques, but also about the spirit and the community behind those products. The emergence of units such as Qmosaic, Cham Do, Bana & Bibi, Moc Mien Thi is proof of the creative transformation of traditional industries, when inspired by young designers and artists.

During the two-day festival, traditional art performances will be held in rotation, from ca tru, hat xam, traditional dance to contemporary music forms mixed with folk sounds. The performances not only contribute to creating a vibrant, rich-in-identity atmosphere but also act as “wordless classes” to help viewers directly experience the national spirit through music, melodies, dances and costumes.

Nurturing love of heritage from childhood

It is not by chance that the festival is called “Growing up with Tradition”. This is not only a slogan but also a cultural orientation, a social dream that every child growing up can carry with them a sincere love for traditional values, seeing them as a natural part of life.

By organizing the event on the occasion of International Children's Day, and integrating activities suitable for all ages, the organizers have created a true festival where children can learn, play and be creative, in a safe, inspiring and national-spirited environment.

Starting the series of activities "Knitting heritage - Weaving creativity"

“Growing up with Tradition” is not just a summer event. This is the start of a series of activities called “Knitting Heritage - Weaving Creativity”, which will last throughout 2025. The series of programs aims to spread the spirit of preserving, creating and developing cultural heritage in contemporary life, one of the important goals in the national cultural strategy.

From simple activities such as coloring pictures, piecing pottery or trying on Vietnamese costumes, to larger stories about handicrafts and the role of heritage in education, “Knitting Heritage - Weaving Creativity” hopes to become a bridge between the past - present - future, between tradition - modernity - creativity.

Amidst the increasingly hurried pace of modern life, Ho Van - Van Mieu has become a place to stop and touch the old things. The festival "Growing up with Tradition" not only brings joyful experiences to children on June 1st, but also kindles in each participant a quiet but profound belief that national culture, if loved, preserved and nurtured properly, will always be an endless source of creativity for the future.
