From June 15th, 2016, the mid-year shopping season kicked off across Malaysia with the opening of the 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival 2016 at Avenue K Shopping Centre, coinciding with the centre's upcoming Aidilfitri Festival celebrations.

1Malaysia Mega Sale CarnivalThis is one of the three biggest shopping campaigns of the year aimed at promoting Malaysia as a world-class shopping destination for both domestic and international tourists. The other two campaigns are1Malaysia Super Sale(01 - 31/03) and1 Malaysia Year-End Sale(November 1st - December 31st). Organized by the Malaysia Shopping Promotion Board, under the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, these three shopping festivals have generated significant profits for the local retail industry and boosted tourism spending in Malaysia.

A total of 15,958 brands from 3,424 companies nationwide participated in this discount campaign.

1. Shopping is one of the most profitable sectors in Malaysia's tourism industry, included in the National Key Economic Zones (NKEA) program with 12 Entry Point Projects.Entry Point Projects(EPPs). Three of these relate to purchasing:

  • EPP 1: Positioning Malaysia as a duty-free shopping destination.

  • EPP 2: Design vibrant shopping districts in Malaysia with Bandar Utama, Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Georgetown, Johor Bahru, Malacca, Sabah, and Sarawak becoming new shopping areas.

  • EPP 3: Establish new high-end outlet centers in Malaysia, specifically Johor Premium Outlet, Mitsui Outlet Park, Freeport A'Famosa Outlet, and Genting Premium Outlet.

2. In 2015, spending on shopping contributed 21.6 billion Malaysian Ringgit (RM), equivalent to 31.3% of the total 69.1 billion RM in tourism revenue. This also marked the first time that shopping surpassed accommodation, becoming the largest component of the country's tourism income.

3. To date, Kuala Lumpur has received numerous international shopping awards, including "Fifth Best Shopping Destination in the World" in 2016 by Expedia UK, and "Second Best Shopping Destination for Muslims" in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) category in 2015, as voted by CrescentRating and MasterCard Muslim Travel Shopping Index.
