More than just an ancient church with its distinctive pink hues, Tan Dinh Church this Christmas season is attracting a large number of young people who come to capture the moment of the lights being turned on, check in, and record videos. A long-standing religious space is being re-examined through the lens of experience and social media.

An ancient church in the heart of the city.

Tan Dinh Church, officially known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was built in the latter half of the 19th century, during the period of French expansion in Saigon. Located on Hai Ba Trung Street – one of the oldest and busiest streets – the church not only served the religious life of the parishioners in the Tan Dinh area but also quickly became an important urban landmark.

Architecturally, Tan Dinh Church is a harmonious blend of the European styles prevalent at the time: Gothic with its high arches and soaring bell tower, Romanesque in its solid overall structure, and subtle touches of Baroque in its decorative details. The tall bell tower, symmetrical facade, columns, and stained-glass windows create an overall structure that is both solemn and aesthetically pleasing.

The most distinctive feature, and the element that makes Tan Dinh Church famous beyond its religious confines, is its pink color. The pink hue covering the entire structure, from the facade to the back, creates a unique appeal. In a context where many old churches are often associated with muted colors like gray or brown, Tan Dinh Church stands out as a gentle exception, both ancient and approachable.

Space of faith and community life

For parishioners, Tan Dinh Church is primarily a place of worship, prayer, and religious activity. During early morning or late afternoon services, the bells ring regularly, and a quiet stream of people enters the sanctuary, creating a familiar rhythm amidst the bustling city. The church's interior is not overly elaborate but still maintains a solemn atmosphere: tall columns, a vaulted ceiling, and light filtering through stained-glass windows depicting Jesus, Mary, and Joseph create a tranquil ambiance, separate from the hustle and bustle outside.

Over the decades, Tan Dinh Church has not only witnessed the city's transformation but has also become a part of collective memory. For many Saigonese, the image of the church is associated with major holidays, with Christmas, with afternoons spent waiting for someone at the gate, or simply a familiar street corner that helps them recognize their place in the vast city.

It is this cultural and religious foundation that has created the enduring appeal of Tan Dinh Church, even before it was "discovered" as a tourist destination or a popular check-in spot.

Christmas transformed Tan Dinh Church into a focal point.

While Tan Dinh Church maintains a solemn atmosphere throughout the year, it transforms with a different appearance each Christmas season. This year, the church continues to attract attention with its elaborate decorations, including a large nativity scene recreating the moment when Saint Joseph led the Virgin Mary to escape the Roman army. This scene not only holds religious significance but is also vividly staged, drawing viewers to stop and admire it.

Within the church grounds, stars, string lights, and decorative lights are strung throughout the trees and pathways. As night falls, the entire space glows, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. The lights aren't overly bright, but they're enough to highlight the ancient architecture and the church's already photogenic pink hue.

Besides the worship area, the section selling familiar Christmas items continues to contribute to the Christmas atmosphere at Tan Dinh Church. Small statues, wreaths, and religious items on display attract both parishioners and visitors, especially young people, who stop to shop and linger longer in the church grounds.

Check-in, video recording, and the "on-air" appearance of Tan Dinh Church.

The explosion of social media has transformed Tan Dinh Church into a different space: a visual experience. This year, the trend of filming videos and taking photos to check in when the church lights up has become more pronounced than ever. From short videos capturing the moment the light gradually illuminates the facade to portraits and group photos, everyone seeks the same backdrop: pink hues and Christmas lights.

Despite the crowds, the atmosphere at Tan Dinh Church remained orderly. People came not only to take photos, but also to experience a festive season with a strong sense of community. The lines of people standing outside, the murmuring conversations, the sounds of Christmas music playing somewhere – all created a picture that was both modern and traditional.

Therefore, Tan Dinh Church is not only "hot" in the sense of a trend, but also shows how an ancient religious building can adapt to contemporary urban life, becoming a meeting point between faith, culture, and the experiential needs of young people.
