Vietnam plans to reopen commercial flights with Japan, South Korea, and other countries with high safety ratings.

The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has developed a plan to resume international flights, initially focusing on South Korea and Japan – destinations with high safety ratings – starting September 15th with a frequency of four round-trip flights per week to South Korea and four to Japan. Leaders of the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that aviation authorities have reached agreements with South Korea and Japan regarding the resumption of flights to these two markets.

Earlier, on the afternoon of September 1st, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) chaired a meeting with representatives from other ministries and agencies to finalize plans for resuming regular international flights, particularly regarding the quarantine procedures for passengers returning to Vietnam. The MOT prioritized the resumption of regular international flights to the following destinations in the immediate future: Guangzhou (China), Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan), Taiwan (China), Vientiane (Laos), and Phnom Penh (Cambodia).

Meanwhile, domestic airlines are ready to reopen international routes. A representative from Vietnam Airlines confirmed that they are ready to operate flights to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN countries from July 2020 as soon as the government allows the resumption of flights. The airline is also preparing flight plans to Europe and Australia in 2021.

Each flight must have a specific plan to ensure safety, including appropriate quarantine measures for each group of people entering the country.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam suspended all commercial flights with other countries from April 1st. Recently, some foreign airlines have resumed international flights to Vietnam, but only for cargo and passenger flights from Vietnam. Passenger flights into Vietnam continue according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' plan, carrying citizens in difficult circumstances, experts, and highly skilled workers, all of whom are subject to quarantine.
