The travel and photography website Capture the Atlas has compiled and published 25 of the most beautiful aurora borealis photos of 2021, taken by 25 photographers from 13 countries around the world. From the lakes and coastlines of the Southern Hemisphere to the snow-capped forests and volcanic mountain ranges of the Northern Hemisphere, the night sky becomes unusually luminous and mysterious in the dancing light of the aurora borealis.

The aurora borealis is the result of the collision between particles in the wind and gases in the atmosphere, creating continuously moving and changing bands of light. Auroras occurring in the Northern Hemisphere are called the aurora borealis, while those in the Southern Hemisphere are called the southern aurora aurora. They look like colorful ribbons of silk in the sky and are considered one of nature's most beautiful sights.
