Recently, Cathay Pacific officially launched a direct passenger flight between Hong Kong (HKG) and Seattle (SEA). This is a symbolic strategic move, not only providing the only direct flight option between the airline's "home city" and the dynamic technology hub of Washington state, but also increasing Cathay Pacific's total number of destinations in the North American market to nine. With a frequency of five flights per week, this route promises to become an important link for both tourists and professionals in the fields of commerce and innovation.
The launch of this new route is particularly special as it coincides with Cathay Pacific's 80th anniversary. To honor eight decades of partnership and companionship with customers since 1946, the airline deployed a special edition Airbus A350 for the inaugural flight. A notable highlight is the iconic "lettuce sandwich" livery, a nostalgic symbol deeply rooted in the airline's glorious history. Using this livery not only pays tribute to the past but also demonstrates a commitment to continuing to advance people and cultural values in the modern aviation era.
The Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 officially takes flight, marking 80 years of partnership.
Reflecting on the importance of connecting with the "Emerald City," Ms. Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Cathay Pacific, affirmed that the launch of the Seattle route underscores the deepening relationship between the two global hubs of innovation and commerce. According to her, Seattle's spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship strongly mirrors Hong Kong's inherent energy. This makes the route not only significant in terms of transportation but also represents a convergence of inspiration and development. Through a massive investment of over HK$100 billion in its fleet, cabin services, and lounges, Cathay Pacific is committed to providing the highest quality travel experience to customers worldwide.
In terms of technical aspects and user experience, Cathay Pacific prioritizes the use of modern wide-body Airbus A350-900 aircraft for this route. Business Class passengers will experience fully flat beds, while Premium Economy offers superior spacious seating. In particular, the airline's Economy Class, already recognized as the "World's Best Economy Class," ensures maximum comfort for long trans-Pacific flights. This demonstrates the group's focus on service quality to maintain its competitiveness on the global aviation map.
With the addition of its ninth destination in Seattle, Cathay Pacific now operates a dense network of nearly 120 round-trip flights per week to North America, solidifying Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub.
The flight schedule is designed to be flexible to meet the changing seasonal needs of passengers. Specifically, from the end of March to October 2026, flight CX852 will depart from Hong Kong at 1:25 PM and land in Seattle around 10:00 AM the same day, facilitating convenient scheduling for work or sightseeing upon arrival. In the opposite direction, flight CX853 from Seattle will depart around midday and land in Hong Kong the following afternoon. With five flights per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, passengers can easily optimize their travel time between the two continents.
Notably, the addition of Seattle to its destination portfolio has boosted Cathay Pacific's North American operating capacity to nearly 120 round-trip flights per week this summer. This network covers key cities including Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, and Vancouver. This expansion not only serves the Hong Kong market but also opens up significant opportunities for passengers from Vietnam. Currently, with 21 flights per week from Ho Chi Minh City and 14 from Hanoi, Vietnamese travelers can easily connect via Hong Kong to Seattle and other major cities in the US and Canada seamlessly.
For the Vietnamese market, this new route opens up opportunities for flexible and premium connections to Washington State (USA) through convenient connecting flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
Beyond passenger transport, the new Seattle route plays a crucial role in Cathay Cargo's global cargo supply chain. Utilizing the cargo bays under the aircraft on passenger flights will significantly complement its schedule of nearly 40 dedicated flights per week to North America. This combination enhances the flow of goods, particularly high-tech and fast-moving consumer goods, between manufacturing hubs in Asia and the vibrant consumer markets on the West Coast of the United States during peak periods.
With a well-planned investment strategy and a long-term vision, Cathay Pacific's direct connection between Hong Kong and Seattle is more than just opening a new route. It's a testament to the airline's strong resilience and ambition to lead the world. The "80 Years of Connection" journey is not only a historical milestone but also a springboard for the airline to continue delivering exceptional value, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as a leading air gateway, a hub of commerce, culture, and boundless connectivity.
