According to geologists, the island was formed from the remains of four underwater volcanoes. Seen from above, the village appears to be located in a green valley completely on the crater of an active volcano.

Aogashima is part of the Izu Islands, more than 350km from Tokyo. The island is the crater of a giant underwater volcano.
