For thousands of years, ships have carried goods, beliefs, languages, and people across the seas connecting Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. The ocean not only shapes the landscape of this region but also contributes to its identity. Perhaps that is why every sea voyage in Southeast Asia offers more than just a simple vacation.
In the summer of 2026, amidst the myriad of choices spread across Southeast Asia, the nine destinations below stand out not only for their beautiful beaches. Each place also offers a unique reason to travel.
EL NIDO (PHILIPPINES) - The Spirit of Exploration
What I remember most about El Nido isn't a specific beach, but the moment the boat unexpectedly turned through a narrow gorge and a turquoise lagoon unfolded before us. The only sounds on the water were the gentle splashing of oars and the wind rustling through the towering limestone cliffs. It felt like I'd stumbled upon a secret world yet to be found on any map.

Located north of Palawan Island, El Nido is a labyrinth of small islands, hidden lagoons, and secluded beaches. In an age where most destinations are already seen on phone screens, it retains a sense of discovery. Perhaps that's why many people leave El Nido with hundreds of photos, but what they remember most is the renewed sense of curiosity.
PHUKET (THAILAND) - A vacation for generations
Many coastal areas are perfect for couples. Many places appeal to young people. Phuket, however, is one of the few destinations that can satisfy almost every member of the family. From boat trips to explore Phi Phi Island and Phang Nga Bay to beaches overlooking the Andaman Sea, the whole family can easily find an experience to share together before the day ends.

In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, street vendors start appearing around the local markets. The aroma of grilled seafood, mingled with the scent of lemongrass, lime leaves, and other characteristic Thai spices, permeates the hot, humid tropical air. That's usually when I feel the rhythm of life on this island most clearly.
KOMODO (INDONESIA) - The wild world still exists
Some places make humans feel like they are in control of nature. Komodo offers the complete opposite feeling. From the summit of Padar, the white sand dunes curving between the deep blue bays appear like a painting untouched by human hands. Further in the distance are the arid islands, where the Komodo dragon still survives as a witness to prehistoric times.

What makes Komodo special isn't its amenities. It's the feeling of being surrounded by nature, which remains the central figure. In an increasingly planned and controlled world, that experience is more precious than ever.
SIPADAN (MALAYSIA) - The Wonders of the Ocean
The surface of the sea often tells only half the story. The other half lies beneath the waters of Sipadan. When diving into the waters around Sipadan, enormous schools of barracuda swirl like a living whirlwind, sea turtles glide silently through the coral reefs, and hundreds of other species coexist in a vibrant world. In that moment, it's hard not to feel small in the face of nature's scale.

What is most precious about Sipadan is that it has remained remarkably unspoiled. After leaving this tiny island, many visitors take with them not only underwater photographs, but also a deep respect for the ocean.
BALI (INDONESIA) - Finding Balance
Many people come to Bali for the sea, but often leave with memories that extend far beyond. A morning in Ubud often begins with the sound of brooms sweeping the yard and the scent of incense from small offerings placed at the gates of houses. Further out towards the island's volcanoes, many people are waiting for the sun to rise through the early morning mist. Just a few hours later, that same sunlight stretches across the beaches of southern Bali.

Within that not-too-vast space lie lush green terraced rice paddies, ancient temples still filled with the scent of incense, and festivals where local people's faith is present in every moment of their daily lives. Perhaps that is why Bali always gives off a sense of balance.
Here, nature, spirituality, culture, and tourism do not exist separately but blend together in a rare and natural way. In a world that constantly urges us to move faster, Bali reminds us that sometimes, living slowly is also an art.
DA NANG (VIETNAM) - The sea is more than just the sea.
One of the most appealing things about Da Nang is that visitors don't have to choose between relaxation and exploration. Mornings on My Khe Beach often begin with the sight of fishermen returning from their night's catch, while in the distance, locals exercise under the coconut trees along the coast. The city awakens gently before entering the vibrant rhythm of a modern tourist center.

From the sea, it only takes a short time to reach the Son Tra Peninsula, where forests still embrace the coastline. As night falls, the Han River transforms into the stage for the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, an event that has been illuminating the city every summer weekend this year.
Few places in the region boast such a harmonious blend of sea, nature, urban life, and large-scale cultural events as Da Nang. That's why this city always offers a more complete experience than a typical beach vacation.
PATTAYA (THAILAND) - Enjoy a glorious summer
Pattaya possesses a unique energy. Water sports, night markets, beachfront cafes, and a vibrant nightlife make it a popular hangout spot for young people. As the city lights up, the seaside streets come alive with music, conversations, and crowds heading towards the beach.

However, behind that image lies a gentler Pattaya. Just a boat trip to Koh Larn island reveals clearer seawater and a significantly slower pace of life. This contrast is what creates the unique charm of this famous seaside city.
CORON (PHILIPPINES) - Stories from Underwater
While El Nido evokes a spirit of exploration on the surface, Coron reveals stories hidden deep beneath the water. War-time shipwrecks lie dormant on the seabed for decades, gradually becoming home to coral and marine life. Above the surface, turquoise lagoons are surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, creating a scene that is both majestic and tranquil.

Coron is one of the few places where history and nature coexist so clearly. Each dive is not just an exploration of the ocean, but also a journey through layers of past memories.
PHU QUOC (VIETNAM) - Spending time together
After many trips, I realized that the greatest luxury in modern life is not fancy hotels or long-haul flights. It's time.
Time to explore the southern islands of Phu Quoc together, to snorkel and admire the coral reefs beneath the crystal-clear waters, and at the end of the day, still sitting together in Sunset Town as the sun sets over the sea and no one is in a hurry to check their watches. Time to talk more instead of just passing each other in the daily grind, to realize that the most memorable moments of a trip are often the simplest.

What makes Phu Quoc so valuable is not just its beautiful beaches or its increasingly sophisticated resort system. Perhaps the island's greatest value lies in its ability to help people slow down long enough to spend time with each other, something that is becoming one of the rarest and most precious things in modern life.
In our memories, sea voyages are often preserved in color. It could be the turquoise of a lagoon in the Philippines, the deep blue of the ocean off the coast of Indonesia, or the orange-yellow of an afternoon on the Andaman Sea.
But after years of traveling across different seas in the region, I've realized that what lingers longest is rarely the color of the water or the whiteness of the sand. What makes a place memorable is often the feeling it leaves behind after the journey is over.
Some places awaken a spirit of exploration that seems to have been dormant since childhood. Some places make people want to slow down. Some places remind us of the wonders of nature. And there are also coastal areas that help loved ones rediscover quality time together amidst increasingly busy lives.
