Unique colorful taxis in Bangkok.

24/04/2014

Taxis around the world are typically white, yellow, and black, while those in Bangkok come in uniquely vibrant colors.

In Bangkok, some taxis are a single color, such as pink, orange, purple, lime green, or yellow, while others combine two colors. Unlike taxi colors in other countries, Bangkok taxis are color-coded.

The single-colored taxis (turquoise, navy blue, sky blue, green, red, yellow, orange, blue, pink, purple, brown) belong to the company, to individual partners, and to a car rental company.

Taxis with a two-color combination are divided into three types: yellow-green, red-blue, and yellow-orange. Yellow-green vehicles are privately owned, red-blue vehicles are rental cars, and yellow-orange vehicles are company taxis.

Taxis are plentiful in Bangkok, so when traveling there, you don't need to worry about transportation; just choose your favorite color and hop in. Yellow and green taxis are generally considered better than other colors.

Besides taxis, which come in many colors, there are also buses. For buses, each color corresponds to differences in fare, route, ownership, and whether or not they have air conditioning.

The buses that run regularly and don't have air conditioning are the red and cream colored ones. The white and blue buses are generally not as good, as they lack air conditioning and the fares are usually slightly higher than the others.

Color isn't limited to transportation; it's also present in people's daily lives. This is because Thai tradition has an astrological rule (influenced by Hindu mythology) that assigns specific colors to each day of the week: Sunday is red, Monday is yellow, Tuesday is pink, Wednesday is green (daytime) and gray (nighttime), Thursday is orange, Friday is blue, and Saturday is purple. These colors are considered lucky, and people even celebrate the birth dates of these colors.
