The Turkish government has just announced plans to introduce an overnight tax on tourists starting in April 2020. This tax will be levied on individuals aged 12 and above and will be based on the star rating of the hotel they book; the more stars a hotel has, the higher the cost.

For a night's stay at a 5-star hotel, tourists will have to pay an additional 18 lira (72,000 VND), while a 4-star hotel will cost 12 lira (48,000 VND). If staying at a 3-star hotel, the tax you have to pay is 9 lira (36,000 VND), and 6 lira (24,000 VND) for 1-2 star accommodations.

For example, a family of four staying for two weeks at a 5-star hotel might have to pay taxes of over 1,000 lira (approximately 4.2 million VND). According to estimates by The Sun, a 14-day holiday in Türkiye at a 5-star resort costs tourists around 3,340 lira (13.5 million VND).

Many places around the world have implemented tourist taxes, including Ibiza (Spain) with 4 euros per night (over 100,000 VND). Tourists also have to pay 10 euros (260,000 VND) to enter Venice. Two cities in the United Kingdom, Edinburgh and Oxford, have also proposed imposing such taxes.
