Abandoned fish pond in the middle of Phu Quy Island

20/10/2020

A peaceful and idyllic "swimming pool" is nestled amidst the pristine Phu Quy Island.

The 110km distance from the mainland is a major obstacle preventing tourists from visiting Phu Quy Island, which is why the island is still likened to a hidden gem in the middle of the vast ocean.

There are tourist spots that, apart from the island's residents, are virtually unknown to anyone else, such as an abandoned fish pond right next to the Tomb of Teacher Sai Nai. Some fishermen on the island call it "Ganh Hang Dam," others call it "Lang Duong Fish Pond," because it was once used to raise squid, but since fishing became popular, the dam has been left abandoned, allowing seawater to flood in. As more tourists visited, the fish pond has become a giant swimming pool, resembling an ancient architectural structure rising from the sea.

After the pandemic, domestic tourism boomed. Phu Quy Island, along with its unique fish pond, also attracted attention from many tourists. However, as it is a new and potentially dangerous tourist destination, visitors, especially families with young children, need to proactively prepare safety measures. Alternatively, they can choose to stroll along the lake's edge and try other forms of tourism on Phu Quy Island, such as cycling along coastal roads, visiting the Sai Nai Teacher's Tomb, camping, or swimming in smaller, shallower natural lakes.

The best time to explore the "fish pond" and visit Phu Quy Island is from May to August, when the sea is calm and the weather is cool.
