Reviving an old canal into a night market in the heart of Chiang Mai.

08/03/2026

As night falls, the Mae Kha canal lights up with stalls, electric lights, and bustling crowds.

From an old canal to a waterfront pedestrian street.

Located not far from Chiang Mai's old town, the Mae Kha Canal Night Market is one of the city's newly emerging evening entertainment spots in northern Thailand. Along the Mae Kha – a canal with a history spanning hundreds of years – the area has been transformed into a pedestrian zone, featuring a small night market, food stalls, and waterfront photo opportunities.

Mae Kha was originally part of the canal and moat system surrounding Chiang Mai from ancient times. For decades, the canal was polluted and largely neglected. In recent years, the local government and community have undertaken a project to clean up and beautify the area. Both banks of the canal have been paved with walkways, railings have been erected, flowers have been planted, and decorative lights have been hung, transforming the once-forgotten area into a lively pedestrian street at night.

The night market is located along the Mae Kha canal, which has surrounded Chiang Mai since ancient times.

The entire market area has two bridges spanning across it, brightly lit with lights.

As the evening light fades, lanterns and strings of yellow lights begin to illuminate, reflecting on the water's surface. The small bridges spanning the canal are brightly lit, and the low-rise buildings on either side create a distinctive scene, leading many visitors to liken it to a Japanese canalside street. Thanks to its neat layout and numerous photo opportunities, Mae Kha Canal quickly became a popular destination for Thai youth and international tourists alike.

The night market is lively and peaceful, situated along the canal.

Unlike large and crowded night markets like Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, Mae Kha Canal Night Market has a more relaxed atmosphere. The walkway along the canal is quite narrow, just wide enough for visitors to stroll, stop to take photos, or browse the small stalls clustered together.

Mae Kha Night Market offers a pleasant stroll because it's not too crowded or congested.

In the evening, the market comes alive with lights, conversations, and the aroma of food wafting through the air. Small benches placed along the walkways or near the canal edge allow visitors to sit, enjoy snacks, and watch the people go by. This space is especially suitable for those who want to experience the local pace of life in a slower way than in crowded shopping areas.

One of the attractions of Mae Kha Canal is its picturesque canalside photo spots. The red-painted bridges, metal railings, colorful murals, and rows of lanterns hanging along the walkway create a striking backdrop in the evening. When the lights reflect on the water, the scene becomes even more enchanting, especially after 6 PM – the time when the market starts to get crowded.

Occasionally, visitors may also encounter street artists performing acoustic music or groups of young people gathering to chat along the canal bank. On the bridge leading over the canal, locals gather to enjoy the breeze, listen to music, or take photos along the length of the canal.

Mae Kha Night Market is a type of night market that is more community-oriented than simply a marketplace.

A paradise of snacks and local food stalls.

Like many night markets in Thailand, food is an indispensable element at Mae Kha Canal Night Market. Along both sides of the canal are dozens of small stalls selling all kinds of snacks, grilled food, and refreshing drinks.

Visitors can easily find familiar street food dishes such as tom yum, pad thai, pad kra pao, stir-fried noodles, Thai-style pancakes, or crispy fried snacks. Many stalls also serve local dishes from Northern Thailand such as khao soi and nam ngiao, with rich flavors that can replace a dinner.

The food stalls are located right at the entrance of the market.

Besides savory food, the beverage stalls also offer a wide variety of options, including Thai milk tea, coffee, fresh fruit juices, smoothies, matcha tea, and refreshing ice cream. A cool drink along with a few skewers of grilled food is enough to create a relaxing evening by the canal.

Besides food, the market also has small stalls selling souvenirs, handcrafted accessories, clothing, and pretty decorative items. The further you go along the canal, the easier it is to find stalls selling handcrafted items made by local people at reasonable prices. Because of this, Mae Kha offers a more intimate and authentic feel compared to larger shopping areas catering to tourists.

Souvenir stalls and shops selling local handicrafts are scattered along both sides of the walkway.

Another interesting feature is that some houses along the canal also utilize their storefronts to open small cafes or sell snacks. This makes the Mae Kha Canal area resemble a miniature "waterfront neighborhood," where the daily life of the locals blends with the stream of tourists strolling each evening.

As we went further in, the lights from the shops dimmed, and the simple, rustic lives of the people living along the canal gradually became apparent.

A new stop on your Chiang Mai exploration journey.

The combination of canal-side spaces, street food, and photogenic spots has made Mae Kha Canal a new highlight on the Chiang Mai tourism map. It's the perfect place to end a day exploring the city: stroll, grab some snacks, take some photos, and enjoy the evening atmosphere of this northern Thai city.

In recent years, Chiang Mai has increasingly focused on renovating public spaces and developing sustainable tourism. The transformation of Mae Kha Canal is a clear example of how a once-neglected area can become a vibrant community hub and a tourist attraction.
