Discover the city of Bagan – Myanmar

09/08/2014

World-renowned for its thousands of unique temples and pagodas, Bagan – the “City of a Thousand Temples” – is a mystical and sacred tourist destination with countless surprises and delights waiting for visitors to discover.

The ancient city of Bagan is located 145 km southeast of Mandalay. Because it has no rainy season, visitors can explore this site at any time of year. Here, tourists can freely discover temples and pagodas built from the 11th to 13th centuries. It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries scattered throughout the central plains of Myanmar, of which more than 2,200 still exist today.

However, due to the sheer number of temples and pagodas, many structures were not regularly maintained and suffered considerable damage. In 1990, the Myanmar government attempted to restore the damaged structures according to their original designs using modern materials, but this plan was immediately rejected by historians and heritage conservationists worldwide. Because the temples were not restored to their original historical form, UNESCO refused to recognize the city as a World Heritage site.

Watching the sunrise and sunset over Bagan is a very popular tourist activity for visitors. At dawn, the sun rises from the horizon, painting the vast plains in brilliant orange and yellow hues. This is truly a wonderful time to admire the temples of Bagan glowing in the sunlight.

As dusk falls, the sky is dotted with blue clouds, but is soon "dyed" by shades of purple and soft yellow light, creating a spectacular sight.

Stepping inside the ancient temples of Bagan, visitors will be impressed by the unique architecture. Large Buddha statues line the walkways, and the vibrant colors of the walls, in shades of red and orange, are adorned with exquisitely carved paintings.

Besides exploring the ancient temples of Bagan, visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy unique local cuisine and visit traditional weaving villages…

If you're planning a backpacking trip in the beautiful country of Myanmar, then Bagan, the city of a thousand temples, is an excellent choice.
