20/09/2019

In recent days, Phu Quoc Island has seen heavy rains over a wide area. Many areas such as Duong Dong town and Cua Can commune have been severely flooded, forcing residents to evacuate. At the same time, tourist areas and resorts have also been negatively affected by this weather condition.

On the morning of September 19, many areas in Duong Dong town of Phu Quoc island district (Kien Giang) were still heavily flooded. This is where many tourist attractions such as Dinh Cau, Duong Dong market, Ganh Dau and the district's administrative centers are concentrated. However, heavy rain in the town has hindered many activities of tourists. According to local residents, there were places where the water was half-deep.

Many alleys of Duong Dong town were still heavily flooded on the morning of September 19.

It is known that after the rain lasted for more than an hour, many neighborhoods and alleys were flooded. People could only watch their belongings floating in the muddy water. Many families had to evacuate, rent hotels or stay at relatives' houses. Daily life was completely disrupted, jobs and children's education in the area were also greatly affected.

Phu Quoc is famous as a beautiful tourist island district of Vietnam, however, since the beginning of August, this place has made many people afraid to travel because it has continuously suffered from two historic floods. In the memory of many people, this place has never been flooded so deeply, floodwaters have separated and isolated many areas, property damage is estimated at up to 100 billion VND.

In fact, many people have reported that the situation of "living with floods" has existed for many years, not just the recent historic floods. Some households in the alleys of Duong Dong town have become accustomed to the scene of water flowing into their houses, sweeping away their belongings every time there is a rainstorm lasting more than an hour.

The flooding has greatly affected Phu Quoc’s tourism activities. It is known that in Duong Dong town, Cua Can commune is home to many famous hotels and resorts. However, the floods do not spare any place, and some tourist areas have also fallen into a state of sluggishness due to flooding.

According to Mr. Mai Van Huynh, Chairman of Phu Quoc District People's Committee, the flooding in the past few days was due to prolonged heavy rains. In the short term, the district has directed responsible units and militia to support people in severely affected areas. In the long term, we still have to wait for the departments to re-survey the canal works in the area and handle the encroached areas.
