After a long time of preparing documents and collecting 2 million signatures of support from all over the world, the Napoli Pizza Makers Association finally succeeded when the Art of Making Napoli Pizza was selected as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 7. The decision was announced at a meeting of the UNESCO Heritage Committee held on Jeju Island, South Korea.

According to AFP news agency, in the dossier submitted to UNESCO, supporters explained that making Napoli pizza has risen to the level of art because it combines the completely handmade method of making pizza and the baker's style, which expresses joy and optimism.

Pizza Neapolitan has a thin, wood-fired crust with two traditional toppings: Marinara (tomato, garlic, oregano, and oil) and Margherita (tomato, mozzarella cheese, basil).

Pizza Magherita with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil

There is a story about the origin of pizza Margherita, which says that this type of pizza appeared in 1889. At that time, Queen Margherita Teresa Giovani, the queen of King Umberto I of Italy, visited Naples. Raffaele Esposito - owner of the Pietro Il Pizzaiolo tavern was asked to prepare a special dish to welcome the queen. Esposito made a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese (a type of cheese made from buffalo milk) and basil, the ingredients that created the three colors red, white and green symbolizing the Italian flag. He named that pizza Margherita.

Until now, pizza is not only a familiar dish of Italian people, but also becomes an "Italian cultural ambassador" all over the world.
