After a long period of preparation and gathering 2 million supporting signatures from around the world, the Naples Pizza Makers Association finally succeeded when the Art of Neapolitan Pizza Making was selected as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 7th. The decision was announced at a meeting of the UNESCO heritage committee held on Jeju Island, South Korea.

According to AFP, in the dossier submitted to UNESCO, supporters explained that Neapolitan pizza has risen to the level of an art form because it combines entirely handcrafted baking techniques and the baker's style, which reflects joy and optimism.

Neapolitan pizza has a thin crust baked in a wood-fired oven and comes in two traditional varieties: Marinara (tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and oil) and Margherita (tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil).

Pizza Marinara includes tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and oil.

Pizza Magherita includes tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil.

There's a story about the origin of Margherita pizza, suggesting it appeared in 1889. At that time, Queen Teresa Giovani, wife of King Umberto I of Italy, visited Naples. Raffaele Esposito, owner of the Pietro Il Pizzaiolo tavern, was asked to prepare a special dish to welcome the queen. Esposito made a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese (a type of cheese made from buffalo milk), and basil – ingredients that created the three colors red, white, and green, symbolizing the Italian flag. He named the pizza Margherita.

To this day, pizza is not only a familiar dish to the people of Italy, but has also become a "cultural ambassador of Italy" all over the world.
