Since its opening in 1907, the gilded Plaza Hotel has become a symbol not only of New York City but also of the world. Soon after its opening, the Plaza became a destination for celebrities, writers, and famous leaders. In 1950, the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright moved into the Plaza for six years. The legendary band The Beatles also stayed here during their first American tour in 1964.

Although the interior scenes in the filmThe Grand Budapest Hotel(2014) was filmed in a luxury department store in Gorlitz, Germany, but the hotel facade in the film poster was inspired by the Palace Bristol Hotel in the Czech Republic, with its characteristic pale pink walls.
