Tet Colors from the Three Regions

11/02/2024

Beyond the traditional sticky rice cake, fatty pork, pickled onions, and red couplets, Tet in the three regions of North, Central, and South Vietnam each possesses its own unique atmosphere, culture, and characteristics. This photo series, captured by three photographers, showcases the Tet atmosphere in these three regions.

In Northern Vietnam, photographer Le Viet Khanh captured the moment a family gathered to wrap banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes) in an ancient, time-worn setting. The old house, a distinctive feature of Duong Lam ancient village, was decorated with red couplets, peach blossoms, and flower pots, creating a vibrant atmosphere of traditional Tet (Vietnamese New Year).

The Tet atmosphere in Central Vietnam is captured through the lens of photographer Le Dinh Hoang. The images feature paper flowers in Thanh Tien village, Phu Mau commune, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province, a place famous for its craft of making paper flowers for worship, especially lotus flowers, and the craft has existed for over 300 years.

Or consider the bánh tét (sticky rice cake) that the people of the ancient capital are meticulously wrapping in the bustling, sun-drenched atmosphere, preparing for the Lunar New Year. Bánh tét and bánh chưng share similarities in ingredients and preparation methods, differing only in shape.

Photographer Nguyen Hai Dong captured the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of the Nga Nam floating market in Soc Trang during the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year). The boats carrying year-end goods at the Nga Nam floating market held many hopes for the local people. Fruits, vegetables, potted chrysanthemums… were eagerly awaited so that people could return home to prepare for Tet, marking the end of a year of hard work. Everyone was hurrying and bustling, yet the air was filled with lively chatter, and faces radiated excitement as they prepared to welcome a prosperous and fulfilling new year.
