Ahead of a major international music event, the government of South Korea's largest port city is pouring all its resources into infrastructure, security, and transportation to welcome the return of global group BTS. The two nights of performances as part of the ARIRANG IN Busan tour are not just a simple entertainment event, but also a strategic economic gamble aimed at boosting tourism in Busan and affirming its position as a leading destination in Asia.
The global economy has witnessed the terms "Dynamite Effect" or "Borahaefication" (painting the city purple) whenever the legendary boy band BTS performed in a particular location. This time, as the members' hometown and a symbol of South Korea's dynamism, the city of Busan is proactively undertaking an unprecedented campaign.
According to an official announcement from the local authorities on June 7th, a special integrated support system has been activated to transform the entire port city into a giant festival space. The campaign's goal is not limited to hosting the two nights of performances at the Busan Asiad Main Stadium on June 12th and 13th, but aims to optimize the experience for hundreds of thousands of ARMY fans from around the world, thereby generating breakthrough revenue for the local service, accommodation, and retail industries.
Busan city is "gambling" on BTS's comeback.
Busan's decision to operate its administrative apparatus at maximum capacity is seen as a smart and carefully calculated gamble. The arrival of the BTS (Bangkok Express) is predicted to solve the economic growth problem after the saturation of the traditional travel industry.
To provide the best possible experience for international visitors, an integrated information platform has been established, directly connecting the city's online portal with the popular travel website Visit Busan. On this system, visitors can access comprehensive information ranging from transportation options, parking, lockers, and lost and found areas to lists of medical facilities, pharmacies, and measures to cope with the intense summer heat.
The entire interface is standardized in English, removing any barriers to access for foreign visitors.
Aware of the immense pressure from the waves of fans flocking to the city, the event organizers placed safety and security measures at the highest alert level. Before the concert took place, local authorities completed final cross-checking sessions with the coordinated participation of the police, fire department, and urban traffic control units.
Throughout the two days of the event, the central control center will continuously monitor crowd density to implement timely traffic management plans. Security personnel will be deployed in high numbers at key subway stations and major roads leading to the stadium to absolutely prevent overcrowding or stampedes, ensuring a completely safe environment for fans attending the festival.
The expected influx of tourists to the city will create a strong attraction not only for the entertainment industry but also for tourism and the local economy.
The city has established a special 24/7 complaint center to thoroughly and quickly address unreasonable hotel price increases, room hoarding, touting, or other illegal business practices.
At popular tourist destinations in South Korea and in bustling public areas, a synchronized system of smart QR code-integrated signage is installed, allowing tourists to easily scan the code with their phones to access emergency hotlines or report service issues, creating a strong protective barrier for consumers.
Beyond just providing support, Busan also organized numerous events to welcome BTS throughout the city.
To address the transportation challenges faced by tens of thousands of spectators converging at the same time, Busan's public transportation map has been flexibly restructured with an unprecedented operating frequency.
The city's subway system decided to add a total of 220 extra trains over the two days of the event, and also extended service hours by one hour compared to normal days. In particular, on Line 3 – the main line directly connecting to the stadium – all reserve trains were mobilized to reduce the time between trains to half of the usual schedule.
Simultaneously, supporting transportation networks, including the light rail line connecting Busan Airport and Gimhae, the urban bus system, and additional trains on the Donghae line, have also been pushed to their highest capacity, ensuring a continuous and smooth flow of people and preventing localized traffic congestion.
Beyond technical and logistical measures, the Busan authorities cleverly transformed this music event into a week-long cultural promotion campaign aimed at encouraging tourists to stay and experience it for longer.
At Haeundae Beach, a symbol of South Korea's summer tourism, Grand Josun Media's giant LED screen officially launched a special campaign showcasing BTS's hit music videos, running continuously until June 21st.
By integrating welcome centers, art galleries, and a series of street performances alongside the event, Busan is demonstrating its ability to transform an entertainment event into a sustainable cultural tourism product, affirming its leading position in harnessing the power of the Hallyu wave internationally.
