First brown bear seen in Spain in 150 years

A brown bear has been spotted wandering through a populated area in north-west Spain for the first time in 150 years, thanks to cameras being used to film the scene.

The image of the animal was captured on camera by a film crew, filming the movie.Montaña ou Morte(Mountain or Death), in Invernadeiro National Park in Galicia province.

Although the area is home to wolves, deer and wild boar, this is believed to be the first time a brown bear has been seen in more than a century. “The male bear, estimated to be between three and five years old, is the first brown bear in the area to be caught on camera, and possibly the first to have passed through the area in 150 years,” said a representative of the production company Zeitun Films.

The brown bear has been a protected species in Spain since 1973.

According to two Invernadeiro employees who are currently working as consultants on the film, the bear spent the entire winter in the Park – presumably after making a journey south from the Sierra del Caurel mountain range.

“Years of conservation work at Invernadeiro National Park have allowed it to become a suitable habitat for brown bears,” the park said.
