If you're a travel and exploration enthusiast, Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia is a perfect choice. It's truly a trip you'll have no regrets on. Established in 1937, Los Glaciares National Park covers an area of 4,459 square kilometers.2Located in Santa Cruz province, it is the second largest national park in Argentina. To get there, visitors will travel from the nearest town, El Calafate, and will need to hire a guide. From El Calafate, it takes only about 30 minutes to drive to the Moreno Glacier Gate.
As a rule, every two to four years, visitors eagerly hope to witness the spectacular sight of a massive block of ice breaking off from the Perito Moreno glacier and falling into the glacial lake Argentino below.
This phenomenon occurs when meltwater from glaciers flows into the lake, causing the water level to rise and forming a tunnel beneath the glacier. Gradually, the arch is hollowed out from the bottom and collapses under the weight of the ice, creating a bomb-like spectacle, accompanied by giant waves crashing in, astonishing visitors.
Unlike other glaciers in Argentina and many other parts of the world, the Perito Moreno Glacier thickens with new ice each year instead of shrinking, although the reason remains a mystery. Scientists believe this is part of a natural cycle due to the glacier's steep terrain.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is a popular tourist destination in Argentina, and Los Glaciares National Park was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. It has been a national park in Argentina since 1945, demonstrating Argentina's deep respect for and connection to its natural resources.
Spanning an area of approximately 600,000 hectares, the Perito Moreno Glacier creates a smaller tributary, Lake Argentino, considered the most beautiful and oldest lake in Argentina, dating back about 15,000 years, with a height of 60 m, a length of 35 km, and a width of 5 km.
This national park is called Los Glaciares because of the large number of natural glaciers it contains. Besides the 60-meter-high Petit Moreno glacier, Los Glaciares National Park boasts many other natural wonders, including two other glaciers and Lake Videdma. The entire Patagonia region has 48 large glaciers and over 100 smaller ones. This is the second largest ice field in the world, excluding Antarctica, with an ice area of over 12,500 square kilometers.2.
Previously, it took several days for the ice dome to melt completely, but in recent years this ice collapse has occurred continuously with greater frequency and scale. However, if you want to witness the entire process of the glacier collapsing, you still need to be patient.
