The new regulation clearly defines the responsibilities and obligations of passengers for their carry-on baggage. Specifically, carry-on baggage that is determined to be overweight will be subject to a strict fee, calculated equivalent to 01 piece of checked baggage at the airport for many different violations.
Specifically, according to the notice from Vietnam Air sent to customers, carry-on baggage determined to be overweight will be subject to a fee equal to 01 piece of checked baggage at the airport for the following cases:
This fee will be applied if the baggage exceeds the maximum weight by up to 10 kg, or exceeds 1 piece of the prescribed standard (maximum 10 kg), or the baggage exceeds the standard carry-on size. The application of the fee right at the aircraft gate is a notable new point, demonstrating the airline's determination to re-establish baggage discipline, ensuring that space and weight in the passenger cabin are strictly controlled.
In particular, in the case that the baggage simultaneously exceeds both the maximum weight of 10 kg and the standard size, the passenger will be charged a higher fee, calculated as 01 piece of bulky checked baggage at the airport.
Regarding passenger responsibility, the airline only accepts carry-on baggage that exceeds the standard for customers who are able to carry and arrange their own baggage.
This is a strong measure to minimize the number of non-compliant items brought into the passenger cabin, affecting the comfort and safety of other passengers. For example, on domestic flights such as Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, a 23kg checked baggage costs about 600,000 VND. Thus, if the carry-on baggage exceeds the maximum standard by 10kg or 1 piece, the fee collected at the gate can be up to 600,000 VND/piece, a large amount compared to the initial cost of the air ticket. For international routes, this fee will be converted to USD and calculated according to the specific itinerary and flight area.
Vietnam Airlines also emphasizes the individual responsibility of each passenger when using the airline's services for excess baggage. The airline only accepts handling and charging for customers who are able to carry and arrange their own baggage without assistance from ground staff or flight attendants. Cases requiring staff intervention to move or arrange will be refused acceptance of excess baggage. This regulation is to ensure that the boarding process is quick and smooth, minimizing the processing time incurred, thereby strictly protecting the punctuality index of flights.
In terms of payment methods, the airline allows passengers to use flexible forms including cash, credit cards or debit cards.
