Sustainable tourism is currently a global trend, aiming to both preserve cultural, biological, and ecosystem values while satisfying people's aesthetic, economic, and social needs. In recent years, this trend has spread rapidly in Vietnam, with not only travel agencies but also individual accommodation establishments focusing on raising awareness of environmental protection and balancing tourism development with nature conservation.

To date, Vietnam has more than 700 accommodation establishments marked as Sustainable Tourism – a certification granted by Booking.com to accommodation establishments worldwide (which can include apartments, B&Bs, hotels, resorts, etc.).
To receive this badge, accommodation establishments need to disclose the sustainable tourism measures they are implementing. The most effective measures for accommodations, as outlined by Booking.com, include: waste, energy and greenhouse gases, water resources, support for local communities, and nature conservation. Furthermore, 32 more specific sustainability measures are proposed for accommodations, such as eliminating single-use plastic toiletries, switching to 100% renewable LED lighting, or investing a certain portion of profits in local communities and conservation projects.
Based on existing standards for sustainable accommodation, Booking.com will assess a property's measures against a validated model and calculate its overall impact score. For properties that do not qualify, experts will share advice and resources to support the implementation of additional sustainability measures.
