Every year thousands of tourists come to East Java Island to admire the majestic scenery of the Tengger mountain range with its mist-shrouded peaks.
Indonesian photographer Helminadia Jabur, 36, is one of those who regularly visits East Java to capture images of this strange land: “The volcano here is known for its magical beauty at dawn, the scene at that time has a surreal look that cannot be described in words. Since I have admired the volcanic space here, I often come here to capture the majestic images.”

The Tengger massif at dawn as the sun begins to rise. Mount Bromo spews red smoke from the ash-grey sand.

The volcanic area is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which attracts thousands of tourists to East Java island every year.

The scenery around the volcano is beautiful but also very dangerous, no one dares to live near this area.
Mount Bromo is 2,329 m high and located on the Sand Sea Plain. Although it is not the highest peak in the range, it is considered the most famous.
Every year hundreds of Indonesians take part in the Yadnya Kasada festival, climbing the volcano and throwing offerings into its crater.
The origin of this custom comes from a legend that there was a princess named Roro Anteng, who came here and founded the country of Tengger with her husband Joko Seger. The princess and her husband were childless so they asked for help from the mountain gods.
The mountain gods agreed to help the princess and her husband. They gave them 24 children. Since then, the princess and her husband often went to the crater to thank the mountain gods by throwing offerings into the crater as a sacrifice to the gods.
Indonesian people today still continue to maintain that custom as a way to show respect to sacred mountain gods.
The Tengger Mountain area has been a national park since 1919, attracting many tourists to East Java. Now, visitors can join hiking trips up to the crater.

From afar, the rocky mountain range is submerged in clouds, only the mountain top receives sunlight.

Visitors can hike for about 45 minutes to reach the top of the volcano or take a jeep tour around the surrounding areas.

Photographers often flock to this area to take pictures because of its beautiful scenery and rare quality of light.

The Sand Sea stretches for kilometers around the mountain ranges.
