30/12/2021

As of the evening of December 28th, five countries and territories have agreed to resume regular commercial passenger flights with Vietnam as planned from January 1st, 2022. These include the United States, Japan, Taiwan (China), Singapore, and Cambodia.

Specifically, regarding Japan, the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has granted flight permits to Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and All Nippon Airways. Vietnam Airlines' first flight was on January 5, 2022, while Vietjet Air and All Nippon Airways' flights were on January 6, 2022. Flights from Japan could not resume as early as January 1st due to Japanese government agencies being on New Year's holiday, and passengers not yet being able to undergo COVID-19 testing as required.

Taiwan (China) agreed to resume flights but requested an increase in frequency to a minimum of 5 flights per week for each side. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has granted permission for flights to Taipei to Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Bamboo Airways.

Singapore has agreed to resume international flights with Vietnam. Vietnam Airlines will operate this route with a frequency of 2 flights per week and Vietjet Air one flight per week. For the Cambodia route, the Civil Aviation Authority has licensed Vietnam Airlines to operate 4 flights per week.

Previously, the Civil Aviation Authority had sent documents and held discussions to resume regular two-way passenger flights with nine countries and territories that the Government agreed to reopen in phase 1, starting from January 1, 2022, including: Japan, South Korea, Taipei (Taiwan), China, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. However, to date, Vietnam has only received written consent from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Cambodia.

Regarding the US, since only Vietnam Airlines operates flights there and has been granted regular operating permits by the aviation authorities of both countries, no further discussion is necessary, and the airline can immediately proceed with the flight as planned. Tickets have already been sold, and the Ho Chi Minh City - San Francisco flight is scheduled for January 9, 2022.

To date, only Laos and China have yet to respond, and Thailand has proposed further discussions on resuming flights.
