Seven Years in Tibet - Heinrich Harrer, 1953

The book is essentially an autobiography of Heinrich Harrer's own experiences in Tibet from 1944 to 1951, when he was still an Austrian mountaineer during the outbreak of World War II. He escaped from a British prisoner of war camp in India and later formed an unusual friendship with the Dalai Lama. Heinrich writes in the book, “Wherever I live, I miss my home in Tibet. I often think that I can still hear the cries of wild geese and cranes, and the flapping of their wings as they fly over Lhasa under the clear, cold moonlight. It is my sincere hope that this story may bring some understanding of a people with a strong will to live who have won so little sympathy from an indifferent world.”
