Seven Years in Tibet - Heinrich Harrer, 1953

The book is actually an autobiography of Heinrich Harrer's experiences in Tibet from 1944 to 1951, when he was still an Austrian mountaineer amidst the outbreak of World War II. He escaped from a British prisoner-of-war camp in India and then forged an extraordinary friendship with the Dalai Lama. Heinrich writes in the book, “Wherever I lived, I felt a longing for my Tibetan home. I often thought I could still hear the cries of wild geese and cranes, and the flapping of their wings as they flew over Lhasa under the clear, cold moonlight. My sincere hope is that this story can offer insights into a people of indomitable will who have received so little empathy from an indifferent world.”
