In the latest Henley Passport Index ranking, published in early July, the Vietnamese passport ranks 94th out of 199 countries and territories worldwide. Accordingly, Vietnamese citizens are visa-exempt, requiring only a visa on arrival or an electronic visa (eTA) with a near 100% success rate in 54 countries and territories.
The highest ranking the Vietnamese passport has ever achieved is 78th, in two consecutive years, 2006 and 2007.
Specifically, visa-free destinations for Vietnamese citizens include: Cook Islands, Micronesia, Niue, Barbados, Haiti, Saint Vincent & Grenadines, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, and Dominica.
Destinations that accept visa on arrival: Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa, Tuvalu, Iran, Kuwait, St. Lucia, Maldives, Nepal, Tajikistan, East Timor, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Comoro Islands, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia.
Destinations that accept eTA: Taiwan (China), Sri Lanka.
Vietnamese citizens only need to apply for a visa on arrival or an electronic visa (eTA) when entering these 54 countries.
