7 hotels and resorts pledge to go plastic-free

As the impacts of climate change become more severe around the world, hotels and resorts are taking proactive steps to reduce their negative impact on the environment. It is a matter of pride that a resort in Vietnam has made its mark on the green map of the tourism industry.

Unnecessary waste is a growing concern in the tourism industry, especially with single-use plastics being consumed at an alarming rate. Recognizing this, some hotels and resorts have made changes to reduce their environmental impact. Here are some of the hotels that have been rated highly for their efforts to promote green living.

Miami Beach Edition

Committed to going plastic-free, EDITION Hotels has even launched a global campaign to eliminate single-use plastic from the hospitality industry. The campaign kicked off at the EDITION Hotel in Miami Beach. EDITION has not only eliminated straws, bottles, cups, lids, and other single-use plastic items from its hotels, but has also provided cost-effective alternatives for any eco-conscious hotel.

Casa Pueblo Tulum

The hotel is completely single-use plastic-free, from the lobby, bar and restaurant to the rooms, which are minimalistically furnished, with purified water in glass bottles and toiletries in recyclable bottles.

Anantara Resort Phuket

Anantara’s environmental measures are implemented across all of its hotels and resorts, but Phuket is of particular concern because the waters around the island are often polluted with rubbish. All plastic bottles and jars have been banned from rooms and gyms, and dry toiletries are packaged in compostable paper, plastic toothbrushes have been replaced with biodegradable straw, and toiletries are sold in large ceramic spray bottles to cut down on plastic packaging.

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa

Set in the stunning Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is set amidst 46 acres of forest. The hotel includes an on-site bottling plant to eliminate single-use plastic bottles, a waste treatment system and a sanitation treatment plant, and has replaced plastic fixtures with eco-friendly alternatives.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay

In addition to eliminating most single-use plastics from its hotel and spa, Six Senses in Ninh Van Bay, Vietnam, launched Earth Lab in 2018, a coral reef restoration initiative, teaching guests how to compost and make their own chemical-free detergents, and even taking them on field and water treatment plant tours to raise awareness and inspire greener, more sustainable habits.

Habitas Tulum

1 Hotel's rooms and lobbies were designed by local artists using native plants and raw materials, and every open space has a fountain. The hotel also provides cloth tote bags for guests to carry out shopping and does not use disposable products.
