In 2001, The Shining was ranked 26th among the American Film Institute's top 50 thrillers. In 2006, renowned critic Roger Ebert, who had previously criticized the film for its difficulty in connecting the characters, included it in his list of great works. He described The Shining as chilling, terrifying, and leaving many unanswered questions about its meaning. One of the elements considered to have contributed to the film's success was the horror setting in the Timberline motel.

Although Stephen King's inspiration for Overlook is said to have come from the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, most of the film's horror scenes were actually filmed at the Timberline Motel. Timberline claims that Kubrick was instructed not to film scenes in Room 217 (Room 237 is used in the book and film) so that future guests wouldn't be frightened by staying there. However, after the film was released, it became the most requested room.
