As the sun sets, people line up to watch Bali’s signature Hindu dance. Kecak dances are often based on Hindu stories about the island’s gods or famous epics. Unlike other dances, Kecak is performed by men rather than women.
The dance uses no music, no electric lights, only the harmonious voices of a male choir in the flickering light of a fire as dusk falls.
As the sun sets, people line up to witness the traditional Hindu dance in Bali.
Kecak, in fact, is a phonetic transcription of the sounds produced by an “orchestra” of about 50 men. There are no elaborate costumes, all members are shirtless and wrapped in black and white striped sarongs – the traditional costume of the people of Bali.
Actors playing the roles of demons and gods performed a dance on a bonfire in the middle of the stage. They walked barefoot on the fire, rolled around in full costume, creating a brilliant picture by the sea.
Kecak became popular in Bali in the 1930s, gradually adjusted and supplemented over the years until today and is commonly performed in coastal temples such as Uluwatu, Tanah Lot... This is one of the most wonderful experiences that visitors should not miss when coming to Bali.
Kecak dances are often based on Hindu stories about the island's gods.
