On July 25, the People's Committee of Da Lat City organized a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction, renovation and upgrading of traffic intersections to install traffic lights. The main purpose is to proactively respond to and resolve traffic congestion, ensure security, order and traffic safety in the city. In addition, it also ensures urban technical infrastructure conditions to serve socio-economic development, especially during holidays, Tet, and the Da Lat Flower Festival.
Currently, there are 7 intersections in the city that will be renovated, upgraded and have traffic lights installed. Specifically, at Kim Cuc intersection, the intersection and the roads connecting to the intersection will be expanded, including: 3 Thang 4 Street, Tran Hung Dao Street, Ho Tung Mau Street, Khoi Nghia Bac Son Street, and the road down to Lam Vien Square.
At the Tran Phu - Ba Trieu - Dao Duy Tu intersection, the intersection and connecting roads will be expanded, including: Tran Phu, Dao Duy Tu, Ba Trieu streets, and the section connecting Tran Phu and Ba Trieu streets.
Meanwhile, at the University 5-way intersection, the intersection will also be expanded with the following sections: Dinh Tien Hoang, Tran Nhan Tong, Phu Dong Thien Vuong, Nguyen Cong Tru, Bui Thi Xuan streets. The Hung Vuong - Tran Quy Cap intersection includes the following sections: Hung Vuong, Tran Quy Cap, and the section connecting Hung Vuong and Tran Quy Cap streets.
Along with that, traffic lights will be installed at the Hai Thuong - 3 Thang 2 intersection, Hoang Van Thu - 3 Thang 2 intersection and Phan Chu Trinh intersection. The total estimated construction investment cost is more than 142.7 billion VND, from the provincial budget. The implementation time is completed in 2021.
Up to now, Da Lat is the only city in the country without traffic lights and this has become a well-known feature. Da Lat is gradually transforming into a tourist city with a sharp increase in the number of tourists every year. Therefore, solving the problem of traffic jams and congestion is always a difficult problem.
There was a proposal to install a traffic light system but it received a lot of opposition because it would lose its character, the narrow and steep streets would make it difficult to stop and wait for traffic lights... Many solutions have been implemented but the traffic congestion situation has not improved, intersections during rush hour are still jammed and traffic police must be present to regularly direct and regulate traffic.
According to the Department of Transport of Lam Dong province, in the context of economic difficulties, the solution of organizing traffic by using a system of traffic lights and smart cameras is appropriate, gradually overcoming the congestion situation in Da Lat city.
