In late spring, jacaranda trees begin to bloom sporadically, adding a romantic touch of color to the streets of Da Lat.

Rare flowers associated with mountain towns

When mentioning the flower seasons in Da Lat, many people often think of the pink cherry blossoms in early spring or the hydrangea gardens that bloom almost all year round. But around March, when the cool chill of the highlands still lingers in the air, the city enters a rather special flower season: the jacaranda season.

Jacaranda trees don't appear as densely as many other familiar flowers in Da Lat. The old trees are usually planted along certain roads, in school grounds, or around public spaces, creating unexpected patches of purple against the green backdrop of the mountain city. This lack of widespread availability means that each flowering season, the blossoming jacaranda trees easily become a gentle highlight in the landscape of this highland city.

This tree has a large trunk, averaging 10 to 15 meters in height, with a wide canopy. Its leaves are compound, pinnate, soft, and small, resembling those of the flamboyant tree but thinner.

According to many documents on the urban history of Da Lat, jacaranda trees were brought to the city in the 1960s when agricultural engineer Luong Van Sau brought seeds for experimental planting. The cool climate year-round of the plateau helped this species adapt quite well. Subsequently, jacaranda trees were gradually planted in many areas of the city, becoming a familiar part of the urban landscape.

Although not a species that appears in large numbers, the jacaranda trees, when in bloom, still create a unique impression, making them one of the images that evoke memories of Da Lat for many.

In the early days of the season, only a few small clusters of flowers appear on the branches. Then, more and more flower clusters bloom, covering the tips of the branches. From a distance, the trees seem to be adorned with gentle patches of purple against a backdrop of green leaves.

Each jacaranda flower is small and bell-shaped, with thin, soft petals. When blooming in large clusters, dozens of flowers are closely packed together, forming dense inflorescences. Under the highland sunlight, the bluish-purple color of the flowers stands out but still retains its characteristic gentle appearance.

Jacaranda trees don't usually bloom all at once. Some trees start flowering early, while others bloom a few weeks later. This allows the flowering season to last for many weeks, creating scattered patches of purple along the city streets.

When the wind blows, the delicate petals fall onto the sidewalk or road, creating patches of pale purple at the base of the trees. This scene gives Da Lat a unique, tranquil and romantic charm.

Jacaranda trees are now planted in many areas of the city. One of the easiest places to spot this species is around Xuan Huong Lake, where the tall branches cast their shadows onto the water's surface.

Additionally, visitors can also find jacaranda trees along streets such as Tran Phu, Yersin, Hai Ba Trung, or the area around Da Lat Pedagogical College. When the flowering season arrives, the tall trees extend over sidewalks and roads, creating striking purple patches against the familiar green backdrop of the mountain town.

Photography tips for the jacaranda season.

The jacaranda blossom season is also a time when many tourists flock to Da Lat to take photos. However, to get beautiful shots with this tree, a few small tips can help make your photos more impressive.

Because jacaranda trees are tall with wide canopies, photographers should stand a little distance away to capture the entire canopy in the frame. Shooting from a low angle also helps highlight the clusters of purple flowers against the sky. Clothing for the photoshoot should also be in light colors such as white, cream, pale yellow, or pastel blue to harmonize with the flowers. These soft tones help the subject stand out while maintaining the gentle feel of the photograph.
