According to CNN, Ulko-Tammio Island, located off the coast of Hamina town, claims to be the world's first tourist island without telephones.
Ulko-Tammio Island is one of Finland's 41 national parks. It is home to many rare species of birds and plants, which visitors can spot while hiking along nature trails or from the bird-watching tower on the island. However, the island is uninhabited.
The Parks & Wildlife company (which manages the island) wants to encourage tourists to turn off their smart devices and enjoy the island's beauty and pristine nature. However, this is just an appeal, so participation in a "digital detox" is entirely voluntary, and since the island always has mobile network coverage, tourists are easily tempted.
Ulko-Tammio Island, located in the Gulf of Eastern Finland, is a national park that encourages visitors to switch off their smart devices and enjoy the island's stunning natural beauty.
The company's staff also hope that this campaign will encourage tourists to put their smart devices aside and focus on interacting with the flora, fauna, and other visitors.
Psychologist Sari Castren at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare suggests that turning off phones, exploring nature, and meeting people in person will certainly improve our mood and health. She believes that taking a break from social media will give people more time for new experiences.
