According to CNN (USA), Ulko-Tammio Island located off the coast of Hamina town claims to be the world's first phone-free tourist island.
Ulko-Tammio Island is one of Finland's 41 national parks. It is home to many rare species of birds and plants, which can be spotted while walking along the nature trails or from the island's bird-watching tower. However, the island is uninhabited.
Parks & Wildlife (the island’s management agency) wants to encourage tourists to turn off their smart devices and enjoy the island’s beauty and unspoiled nature. However, this is just an appeal, so participating in the “digital detox” for tourists is completely voluntary, the island always has a working mobile network so tourists are easily tempted.
Ulko-Tammio Island in the Eastern Gulf of Finland is a national park that is calling on visitors to turn off their smart devices and enjoy the island's amazing nature.
The company's staff also hope the campaign will help tourists put their smart devices aside and focus on interacting with flora, fauna and other visitors.
Psychologist Sari Castren at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare says that turning off your phone, exploring nature, and meeting people face-to-face can definitely improve your mood and well-being. She says taking a break from social media will give people more time for new experiences.
