Rising airfare prices are a major headache for many travelers during this year's peak summer travel season. According to surveys, airfares from Hanoi to popular coastal destinations such as Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Quy Nhon, and Nha Trang have doubled compared to June.
Round-trip airfares for the Hanoi - Nha Trang route from July 17th to the end of August, in economy class, on Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air range from 4 to 7.6 million VND. Airfares for the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route range from 4 to 7 million VND. Previously, round-trip fares for these two routes ranged from 3 to 5 million VND. The highest price increase is still for the Hanoi - Con Dao route, as from July 17th to the end of September, there are no more tickets available on abay.vn, while on traveloka.com, economy class fares range from 3.4 to 5.2 million VND per ticket/one-way.
Rising airfares are impacting Vietnam's tourism industry.
Rising airfares have been a major concern for Vietnam's tourism industry since the beginning of 2024, especially from March onwards. Despite numerous adjustment efforts from relevant parties, airfares saw a slight decrease in June, but this was only temporary and quickly returned to high levels.
This has left many travelers regretting the days of lower airfares and forcing them to adjust their travel plans. The increase in domestic airfares will also reduce the competitiveness of the aviation industry compared to other transportation sectors.
The leaders of the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority have requested that airlines work with aircraft leasing partners worldwide to find aircraft and supplement their transport capacity.
Recently, it's noticeable that domestic tourists are increasingly traveling by private vehicles, trains, etc. This shift in habits has a significant impact on the domestic tourism market. People traveling by private vehicles, cars, or trains spend more time on their trips, thus reducing their time spent on shopping and using tourism services. Furthermore, tourists tend to choose destinations that are nearby, offering convenience and saving both time and money.
Consumers have a herd mentality; trends are very strong, and they easily follow the crowd. Therefore, it is necessary to control and prevent this risk immediately. Vietnam's goal this year is to welcome 110 million domestic tourists. Many measures need to be implemented to achieve this goal.
The leaders of the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority have requested that airlines work with aircraft leasing partners worldwide to find aircraft, supplement their transport capacity, and increase supply on domestic routes and routes serving tourism. Airlines need to develop flexible fare ranges and offer preferential fare policies on domestic routes.
