Last winter in the Alps was the second warmest in Austria since 1851, forcing ski resorts to adapt to milder conditions, according to a joint report by the Austrian, German and Swiss weather agencies. Fifty years ago, the Austrian government banned cross-country cycling in mountain ranges like the Alps unless approved by the authorities. Violators could be fined up to 730 euros ($800), or even several thousand euros.

The aim of the initiative is to expand access, ensuring mountain bikers have access to more trails, thereby boosting tourism and local economic development. At the same time, it encourages visitors to use environmentally friendly transport, contributing to reducing air pollution and noise.

The Austrian government will negotiate with landowners to lease or purchase land, or to obtain land use rights for the purpose of building bike parks and trails. The government will work with local communities to ensure that new bike parks and trails are designed and built to suit their needs.
