From July 15th to August 11th, Copenhagen will launch the CopenPay pilot program, turning eco-friendly actions by tourists into "currency" to exchange for unique cultural experiences.
According to Visit Copenhagen, visitors who bring plastic waste to the Danish National Gallery will be able to participate in workshops that transform waste into works of art. Visitors can also participate in activities such as cycling, using public transport, cleaning up trash, or volunteering at urban farms.
Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark, is also a leading urban center in Northern Europe.
Other eco-friendly activities such as cycling, participating in cleanups, and volunteering at urban farms are also rewarded with free tours, free kayak rentals, and even free vegetarian lunches made with local ingredients.
The rewards system is based on trust, but travelers can present their public transport tickets to receive rewards. An online map featuring over 20 participating locations has been released. If successful, CopenPay could be rolled out year-round.
The program was launched amid growing concerns about the environmental and social impact of tourism. The city is determined to transform tourism from an environmental burden into a positive force by changing how people travel, consume, and interact with local residents.
With CopenPay, the local government is empowering every visitor to experience more of what Copenhagen has to offer and placing less burden on our planet. The program is being launched at a time of growing concern about the environmental and social impacts of tourism, which has sparked protests in Barcelona, the Canary Islands, and Mallorca recently.
Tourists can participate in activities such as cycling, using public transport, and cleaning up trash.
The Telegraph reports that more than two-thirds of hotels in Copenhagen hold eco-certifications. Notably, visitors can exchange empty cans or plastic cups for cash at vending machines. The city also boasts over 320km of bike paths and several train lines, while the local airport is one of the busiest in the Nordic countries.
Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark, is also a leading urban center in Northern Europe. The Danish capital impresses with its ancient architecture, from castles to churches and buildings steeped in history and culture. The system of rivers and canals, along with the charming houses reflected in the water, creates a peaceful and romantic scene in the heart of the capital. Visiting Copenhagen allows you to relax while exploring its unique architecture and culture.
