From July 15 to August 11, Copenhagen will launch a CopenPay pilot program, turning visitors' green actions into "currency" in exchange for unique cultural experiences.
According to Visit Copenhagen, visitors who bring plastic waste to the National Gallery of Denmark will be able to participate in workshops to turn waste into works of art. Visitors can participate in activities such as cycling, taking public transport, cleaning up waste, or volunteering at urban farms.
Copenhagen - the capital and largest city of Denmark, also a leading urban center in Northern Europe
Other eco-friendly activities like cycling, participating in cleanups, volunteering at urban farms are also rewarded with free tours, free kayak rentals, and even free vegetarian lunches with local ingredients.
The rewards system is based on trust, but travelers can present their public transport tickets to receive rewards. An online map with more than 20 participating locations has been published. If successful, CopenPay could be rolled out year-round.
The program was launched amid growing concerns about the environmental and social impacts of tourism. The city is determined to turn tourism from an environmental burden into a positive force, by changing the way it travels, consumes and interacts with locals.
With CopenPay, local authorities are empowering every traveler to experience more of what Copenhagen has to offer while putting less of a strain on our planet. The scheme is being launched at a time of growing concern about the environmental and social impacts of tourism, which has recently sparked protests in Barcelona, the Canary Islands and Mallorca.
Visitors can participate in activities such as cycling, taking public transport, and cleaning up trash.
More than two-thirds of Copenhagen's hotels have eco-certification, the Telegraph reports, and visitors can exchange empty cans and plastic cups for cash at vending machines. The city also has more than 200 miles of bike paths and several train lines, while the local airport is one of the busiest in the Nordic countries.
Copenhagen - the capital and largest city of Denmark, is also the leading urban center in Northern Europe.
