The Danish capital's tourism agency (Visit Copenhagen), also known as Wonderful Copenhagen, said the "CopenPay" program will be tested from July 15 to August 11, 2024, with content aimed at encouraging tourists to take environmentally friendly actions into currency in exchange for cultural experiences in the city.
With the content proposed in "CopenPay", tourists coming to Copenhagen who participate in environmentally friendly activities such as picking up trash or traveling by public transport will receive rewards such as coffee, food or participate in cultural experiences and free tours at some locations.
Visitors traveling within the city by public transport will receive rewards.
Denmark’s capital is loved by visitors for its beautiful architecture, world-class cuisine and clean, safe, green environment. According to the tourist board, it’s a great place to get around on two wheels, with 382 km of bike lanes and 62% of residents commuting by bike.
“With CopenPay, we empower people to experience more than they thought possible, while aiming to reduce the burden on our planet,” said a representative of Wonderful Copenhagen. This will create meaningful and memorable experiences for visitors to the city, as well as demonstrate human responsibility in protecting the environment.
The pilot project could be implemented year-round if successful. At a time of growing concern about the environmental and social impact of tourism, which has recently sparked protests in Barcelona, the Canary Islands and Mallorca, the Copenhagen project is a welcome sign.
Copenhagen aims to become a green and sustainable tourist city.
Wonderful Copenhagen representatives expressed their desire: “We must turn tourism from an environmental burden into a driver for positive change and the first step in this transition is to change the way we travel, what we consume and how we interact with local people.”
Copenhagen is trying to prove that it is possible to build a green and sustainable city. The city's efforts are an inspiration for other countries and cities around the world to join hands to protect the environment and build a better future for humanity.
