Is Facebook the problem or are we the problem?

21/10/2021

Eleven years ago, the prestigious Time magazine honored Mark Zuckerberg - the father of the social network Facebook, as "Person of the Year". In October 2021, the magazine once again solemnly named the CEO, but with the suggestion: "Delete Facebook, yes or no?".

Nightmare Comes

The first half of October was probably a nightmare for Facebook. On October 4, Facebook and its applications including Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a technical problem for more than 6 hours, leaving more than 3 billion users unable to access the service. On October 8, the problem recurred for a shorter period of time, about 2 hours.

While Facebook was able to fix the two technical issues within 24 hours, it was unable to quickly resolve another issue: the testimony of a former Facebook employee, Frances Haugen, before the US Senate on October 5. Haugen said that before leaving her job, she secretly copied 10,000 internal Facebook documents and sent them to US lawmakers, accusing Facebook of covering up theThey knew about the negative impacts their platform was causing..

During the hearing, Ms. Haugen cited internal documents accusing Facebook of "always prioritizing profits over the interests of users," harming the mental health of teenagers and using algorithms to destabilize democracy through inaccurate and divisive content. In addition, Facebook also has a separate mechanism for VIP accounts, allowing VIPs to "run wild" on cyberspace. According to Ms. Haugen, Facebook clearly understands the consequences of those things, but also understands that if they adjust their algorithms to make their platform safer for users, users will be less "interested" in Facebook, lessclickThe situation became more tense when on October 18, in the US, a group of about 20 people came to Mark Zuckerberg's residence to protest and demand the dismissal of this CEO.

Trên nền tảng Facebook Việt Nam, rất dễ gặp

On the Vietnamese Facebook platform, it is very easy to see people shouting, condemning or even boycotting a certain famous person.

“Delete Facebook forever!”

As an immediate effect, all over the world, thousands of people complained about this social network's deep interference in collecting users' personal information, the widespread situation of fake news and fraud..., to the point that many people declared to immediately delete the application and boycott this social network.

Evan Greer, director of Fight For The Future (a digital rights organization), tweeted: "#DeleteFacebook. But we need to actually delete surveillance capitalism. We need to do this by asking lawmakers in Washington DC to pass a data privacy bill that wipes out Facebook's business model, which is based on mining individual data and using it to create algorithms that manipulate users."

Maria Ressa, a Filipino journalist who just won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, also harshly criticized Facebook. According to her, Facebook has failed to prevent fake news and hateful information on this platform. She said that Facebook's algorithms "prioritize the spread of lies, anger, and hatred over authentic evidence."

Along with lawsuits and complaints about the level of personal information leakage when using Facebook, the situation of fake news, toxic news, contentnonsense and cyber attacks are also increasing on this social network. Not far away, on the Facebook Vietnam platform, netizens are entertained every day bydrama, "exposing", "teasing" someone. For example, Chipu's recent incident of using half-English, half-Vietnamese language was widely ridiculed by netizens for a while (and still hasn't stopped); or the livestream scenarios that intentionally cause shock and curse to attract more and more viewers, which are full of annoyance... Is Facebook still a healthy social network, or is it time for us to "delete Facebook"?

Don't blame Facebook

"Thanks to Facebook, I have met many good friends, people who are intelligent, successful and full of positive energy. Thanks to Facebook, I have shared many of my experiences with food lovers. Thanks to Facebook, I have found relatives and friends who have been lost for a long time [...]" - excerpt from Facebook Nguyen Manh Hung, a chef with more than 16,000 followers on his personal account.

Chef Nguyen Manh Hung is not the only one standing on the "side" of defending Facebook's interests. And until the US courts decide the right and wrong in Facebook's recent series of scandals, we - those who access this blue F application every day - can still answer for ourselves.

Are we always curious about shocking, sensational news? Do we feel excited every time a new "case" "explodes" on the internet? Do we feel "warmer" when we "share" our sadness and sympathy for some strange tragedy on the internet? And are we still following pages that gossip about showbiz secrets, accusations, and sChicken Pond, NEU Confessions,...?

By now, you've probably realized that Facebook does nothing but serve up the food our souls crave—foodtoxic.

Change your "taste"

Is there any way to keep your Facebook healthy and positive?

First of all, stop blaming Facebook. Change your “unhealthy” interests and concerns, and Facebook will immediately change its algorithm for you.

Next, you don’t necessarily have to delete Facebook (and switch to a new social network). Instead, change yourself by adjusting the way you perceive, access, and use information. Think about the things that make youuncomfortablewhen on Facebook and remove them. Only choose to receive information from official pages, only follow content that brings positive messages. In particular, absolutely remove accounts that bring useless content that has no value to your life.

Finally, understand that Facebook is a space.virtual, but how you use it isReal. From how much time you spend a day in that space, you clicklikeWhat images you see, what comments you leave and how you interact, and the emotions you absorb back into yourself after using it all speak volumes about who you really are.

Empty

Facebook was originally just a tool, like a mirror, to reflect a person’s spiritual life. If the image you see when you look in the mirror is not beautiful, what you need to do is change yourself to be better, not smash that mirror.
