08/11/2021

Urban Layers, taking place in District 1 (HCMC), is a Graffiti art exhibition combined with AR virtual reality technology, creating a comprehensive picture of Saigon with unique touches of contemporary spirit.

The Urban Layers exhibition is a collaboration between Wabi-Sabi Creative and the Wallovers artist group. The works are made by the Wallovers artist group, including three main artists: Zkhoa (Trang Nhon Khoa), Cresk (Nguyen Tan Luc) and Daes (Luu Doan Duy Linh). The exhibition focuses on the story of Saigon city but is told through the language of art from the perspective of contemporary young people. In addition to the core members, Deska (Pham Thanh Nguyen) also practiced some works as a guest artist.

By using Graffiti - a form of street art, combined with technological elements, Wallovers affirm their desire to constantly renew artistic materials, in order to create a new space for works. This is also considered a new transformation in art.

Talking about this exhibition, the group of artists affirmed that "they do not want to limit themselves to a general vision but want to focus more on their own experiences, thereby connecting and representing what they really feel". While Zkhoa sees the most genuine aspects of the race for material things and making a living, Cresk chooses a theme revolving around the image of women, thereby questioning the concept of femininity in the community. In addition, Cresk also incorporates elements of the Vietnamese people's religious tendencies in his works. Meanwhile, Daes's works help viewers see the city through a cultural lens such as the image of the Unicorn, Lion, and Dragon, but in a new contemporary look.

The exhibition space recreates social realities, while also assuming a utopian world that combines old values with the development of the digital future. The layering in the exhibition aims to create a different perception in the specialized cultural perspective of each artist, thereby through the contrast between reality and development, creating a transformational landscape for the future in the eyes of young people. Wallovers have applied the division, separation, and decomposition of each urban component to tell their personalized stories.

"Urban Layers wants to bring a new perspective through the familiar, no matter what your perspective is, you can still expand the conversation and see the other potential of street art," the artists added.
