Hanoi jumps to Telegraph's top destination list.

Launched in 1998, the annual Telegraph Travel Awards have returned for the 2023 rankings, after a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Approximately 30,000 Telegraph readers voted in 20 categories across the travel industry, from best destinations to outstanding airlines, cruise lines, and tour operators.

This year, Cape Town (South Africa) ranked number 1 in the Telegraph's top 10 cities as voted by readers, while European cities dominated the ranking. No Southeast Asian destinations made it into the top 10, with only Singapore at position 20. Hanoi ranked 27th, among the cities that made a significant leap in ranking compared to 2019 (up 27 places, from position 54).

In the ranking of the top 10 cities outside of Europe and America (Best in the rest of the world), Southeast Asian destinations contributed three representatives: Singapore ranked 6th, Chiang Mai ranked 7th, and Hanoi ranked 8th.

Since 2014, Vietnam has consistently been in the top 20 most popular countries according to the Telegraph Travel Awards. In 2023, Vietnam continued its presence in the top 20, ranking 18th, just above Thailand (19th). In the top 10 most popular countries in Asia and the Middle East in 2023, Vietnam ranked 3rd, after Japan and Sri Lanka.
