Asian tourists are expected to boost Swiss tourism in 2023.

Switzerland Tourism announced on February 23rd that Asian tourists are expected to support the recovery of the Swiss tourism industry in 2023, after American tourists helped lift the industry out of its slump caused by the pandemic last year.

Reportedly, the number of foreign tourists visiting Switzerland's mountains, lakes, and cities dropped sharply in 2020 and 2021, as countries implemented travel restrictions to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the number of overnight stays in Switzerland recorded a 29% increase in 2022, when the aforementioned restrictions were lifted.

Also in 2022, the number of American tourists more than doubled compared to the previous year. This increase was driven by the appreciation of the US dollar, making Swiss destinations more affordable.

The Swiss Tourism Authority now expects the number of visitors to Switzerland to remain stable in 2023, before growing again in 2024 and 2025.

In a related statement, Martin Nydegger, Director of the Swiss Tourism Agency, emphasized: “2023 will mark the return of Asian tourist markets; prior to that, the US and European tourist markets returned in 2022.”

Furthermore, Martin Nydegger noted: “We feel the Chinese tourist market will change their travel patterns”; adding that Chinese tourists are seeking more nature and outdoor activities. They are also traveling in smaller groups and visiting multiple countries individually, rather than visiting many countries in a single trip.

According to statistics released by the Swiss government on February 23, the number of overnight stays by Chinese tourists has increased significantly this year; however, this figure is still only about one-fifth of the level recorded in 2019.

"Travel companies have told us that demand is high and will continue to increase," added the director of the Swiss Tourism Agency, referring to Chinese tourists.
