After two years of disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carnival, with its vibrant colors and elaborate costumes, is back. Carnival usually takes place before the start of the 40 days of Lent each year. The name of the festival is believed to originate from the medieval Latin "carnem levare" or "carnelevarium," meaning to remove meat. Therefore, this festival is considered an act of saying goodbye to "fleshly pleasures" before the start of Christian Lent. During this time, believers are obligated to abstain from meat, avoid sexual relations, and follow other ascetic rules.
The Venice Carnival 2023 (Carnevale di Venezia 2023) took place from February 4-21 in Venice, Italy.
Throughout the festival, Venice comes alive with music and color. Thousands of people fill the streets, docks, and St. Mark's Square with vibrant and elaborate costumes in the style of classic ballroom dancing, complete with masks, feathered hats, wigs, and more.
Masks are the most distinctive feature of the Venetian carnival, making social classes disappear, erasing age differences, wealth disparities, and gender distinctions.
Traditionally, masquerade masks were made of leather or papier-mâché using traditional techniques. Today, masks are also made from plaster and gold leaf, and are always hand-painted, with added decorative details such as feathers and gemstones.
The Venice Carnival, aimed at reviving lost history and culture, is an opportunity for people to escape from everyday life and transform themselves into someone else. It's a time for people to have fun, dance, and celebrate the history of a peaceful nation and a just society, as well as to encourage patriotism in every citizen.
This event is a cultural hallmark of Venice, the city of canals.
The Venice Carnival was first held in 1296. After a long hiatus, the festival was revived in 1980 and held regularly every year until the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the festival was canceled, and in 2020, the event was open only to locals.
Each year the festival has a different theme, but all aim to celebrate culture and create joyful festivities for the people at the beginning of the New Year.
