On June 1, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) said it will cooperate with Tongyeong City, South Gyeongsang Province (southeast of the Korean Peninsula), to launch a green tourism program, contributing to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help solve the climate change crisis.
The KTO said that the "Zero Carbon Trip" is a pilot tourism program that will take place on June 18 and June 25, 2021, on Yeondae Island in Tongyeong City. The KTO is now looking for participants for the program, with the goal of selecting 20 teams, each consisting of two to four members.

The “Zero Carbon Trip” will be a two-day excursion to an eco-friendly park on the island, which is home to solar-powered manufacturing facilities. Each team will camp at the park, following the Government’s social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
During their stay, participants will be asked not to use fossil fuels or disposable products, nor to dispose of non-recyclable waste, aiming to "travel without creating carbon emissions".

During the program, a local restaurant chef will conduct a cooking class with eco-friendly dishes using available ingredients. Participants will also be encouraged to collect plastic waste as they walk around the island, which can be used as decorative items.
Other events include a solar-powered concert, eco-trail walks with ecologists and stargazing at night.
