Crickets are a popular food in many Asian and African countries. They are proven to be rich in protein and contain many other nutrients.
Since July, Tokyo, Japan-based airline Zipair has been offering passengers a choice of a range of meals made from insects.

“The meal ingredients contain cricket flour, gryllus bimaculatus,” the airline said in a statement. “By consuming an alternative source of protein, the use of cricket flour in food preparation can have a positive impact on the environment and climate.”
The restaurant is serving burgers and pasta, both of which contain cricket powder. They must be ordered in advance and cost about $17.50 a serving.
Zipair has partnered with food tech company Gryllus to serve this unique dish to passengers. The airline has been taking orders for the dish since July and so far, they have not received any complaints.

“We have received more than 60 orders for these two dishes since their launch on July 1,” said Zipair spokesman Mark Matsumoto. “As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have partnered with Gryllus to provide an environmentally friendly meal option that will help reduce food waste on an international scale.”
In addition, passengers can also pre-order these dishes on flights from Narita Airport, Japan to Bangkok (Thailand), Singapore, Honolulu and Los Angeles (USA).
