The powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28th, causing aftershocks in some areas of northern Thailand, raised concerns about a slowdown in Thailand's tourism industry. However, despite initial predictions, Vietnamese travel companies continued to record a large number of customers booking tours to Thailand in April, demonstrating the irresistible appeal of the "Land of Smiles".
Nevertheless, many Vietnamese tourists still expressed concerns about safety, questioning whether Thailand is still a safe travel destination at this time. In response to these concerns, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) quickly issued a statement reassuring them, affirming that all festival activities, transportation, services, and tourism nationwide are operating normally and are unaffected by the earthquake aftershocks.
The earthquake did not significantly affect life and tourism in Thailand.
Thai authorities also assessed that the earthquake did not cause serious damage across the country. The two major international airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, remained operational, and the BTS and MRT train systems in Bangkok, as well as highways and expressways nationwide, reported no incidents.
The biggest reason why Vietnamese tourists can't resist the allure of Thailand is the traditional Songkran water festival, a unique and colorful cultural event deeply rooted in the identity of the "Land of the Golden Temples". This year, the festival not only marks its full return after pandemic restrictions, but also holds a more special significance than ever before: Songkran 2025 has been honored by UNESCO as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a well-deserved recognition of its profound traditional cultural values.
The Water Splashing Festival takes place over three main days, from April 13th to 15th; however, many places organize it a week earlier and it can last up to half a month.
With the theme "Songkran in Thailand – Traditional Thai New Year Festival," this year's festival promises to offer visitors diverse and rich cultural experiences. More than just street water splashing, Songkran 2025 is a nationwide cultural event, spreading joy and celebration to all parts of the country, from the central, northern, and northeastern regions to the southern coastal areas.
This is the New Year celebration in Thailand, also the biggest tourist event of the year, attracting visitors with water-throwing activities taking place everywhere.
Songkran 2025 is also a key highlight in the "Thailand Tourism and Sports Year 2025" program, an ambitious tourism promotion campaign by the Thai government. This festival is expected to create the most vibrant and exciting tourism season in many years, attracting millions of tourists from around the world to the "Land of Smiles". Vietnamese tourists, with their love for Thai culture and people, will certainly not miss the opportunity to immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere and experience unforgettable moments.
This year, Thailand's traditional water festival not only returns in full force after the pandemic, but also carries a more special meaning than ever before.

The 2025 Songkran Festival is fast approaching, promising visitors unique cultural experiences and unforgettable joyful moments. The Maha Songkran World Water Festival at Sanam Luang & Ratchadamnoen Klang, Bangkok (April 11–15) is the biggest event, featuring spectacular water splashing, traditional cultural activities, and vibrant entertainment. The S20 Songkran Music Festival at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok (April 12–14) is a unique electronic music festival combined with water splashing, attracting young people and music lovers. Chiang Mai (April 7–16) offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the traditional festival atmosphere, with ancient rituals and distinctive cultural activities. Khon Kaen (April 8–15) is one of the most popular destinations to experience the Songkran festival in Northeast Thailand.
Many people are looking forward to the activities that will be organized to celebrate this major holiday.
Coastal cities like Phuket, Songkhla, and Surat Thani are ideal destinations for those who want to combine beach tourism with participating in the Songkran festival. Visitors can also explore the unique cultures of different regions in Thailand through highland cultural parades in Phrae, Lamphun, and Ubon Ratchathani.
Songkran 2025 is not just an ordinary water festival, but a nationwide cultural event blending tradition and modernity. Visitors will be able to participate in cultural rituals, folk fairs, art performances, and diverse entertainment events. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has confirmed that all economic, transportation, and tourism activities nationwide have returned to normal following the earthquake. Safety checks and preparations are still underway to ensure a safe and successful festival season.
