Cymatics(from the Greek: κῦμα, meaning "wave") is a scientific term referring to vibrations produced by sound frequencies. For example, when the surface of a disc, plate, or membrane is vibrated, different areas of the surface can be seen vibrating to varying degrees. This varying vibration is observed when the vibrating surface is covered with a thin layer of small particles or liquid.
Based on that research, musician Nigel Stanford's eponymous musical work, *Cymatics*, uses sand, liquids, fire, and electricity to transform sound frequencies into vibrations observable to the naked eye.
Respond to the newspaperDezeen,Stanford said his idea was to create a video in which each sound is represented by a visible element. This is a "reverse" project because writing the music is the final step.
"First, I look for scientific experiments on the effects of sound waves on matter. I'll see which experiments have visually stunning effects and then write music based on those experiments."

First came the Chladni disc, a thin metal disc attached to a speaker, with a layer of sand spread on top. Each sound frequency played on the keyboard would resonate through the metal disc, causing the sand to move into specific shapes.

Next, a glass disc containing vodka is attached to another speaker that emits sound frequencies of 50 Hz and 100 Hz to create waves on the surface of the liquid.

Connected to the drum set is a water tap. The water flowing through the tap will take on a spiral shape when the sound frequency, corresponding to the camera's frame rate of 25 Hz, is heard.

The stream of water poured into the tray will change shape when the three electromagnets underneath are activated. Each key on the keyboard will activate a certain number of magnets, creating different visual effects.

Flame waves are created by a metal tube containing gas connected to a speaker. Different sound frequencies form pressure waves in the gas, thereby creating high or low flames erupting from holes in the metal tube.

At the end of the video, Standford overwhelms viewers with his "playing" with electricity. This is only possible while wearing the Faraday metal suit. When the suit completely envelops the musician's body, the metal conducts electricity from the source and transmits it directly to the ground, without affecting the person inside. Thanks to this, Standford can freely dance, creating impressive visuals that provide a visually stunning ending for the viewers.
